Hadith #9593

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The beginning of amusement is play and its end is war.

This wise utterance holds great wisdom and insight into the nature of human behavior and the consequences that can arise from indulging in frivolous activities.

Let us delve into the important words of this Hadith and their meanings. The word (la'bun) "لَعْبٌ" refers to amusement or play, while (harbun) "حَرْبٌ" means war. Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris.

This verse further emphasizes the transient nature of worldly pursuits and the illusion of permanence they create. It warns us against becoming engrossed in the materialistic aspects of life, as they can lead to arrogance, competition, and ultimately, destruction.
