اَلبِشْرُ يُوْنِسُ الرِّفاقَ۔
Cheerfulness makes companions affable.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Being Cheerful And Smiling)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "البِشْرُ يُوْنِسُ الرِّفاقَ۔" This can be translated as
Cheerfulness makes companions affable.
Let us delve into the connotation of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (bushr) "بِشْر" in this Hadith refers to cheerfulness, happiness, and a positive demeanor. It signifies the state of being joyful and spreading joy to others. This quality is highly valued in Islam as it brings people closer and creates a harmonious atmosphere. The word (yoonisu) "يُوْنِسُ" means to make or cause, and (ar-rifaq) "الرِّفاقَ" refers to companions or friends.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to maintain a positive outlook and to spread happiness among their companions. Allah says in Surah An-Nur (24:26),
Good women are for good men, and good men are for good women.
This verse emphasizes the importance of positivity and cheerfulness in relationships. When individuals possess a joyful disposition, they attract like-minded people and foster strong bonds of friendship.
Furthermore, the Quran teaches us the importance of kindness and good character. In Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), Allah describes the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying,
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
The Prophet (ﷺ) was known for his cheerful nature, which endeared him to his companions and made him a beloved leader. His companions were drawn to him because of his positive demeanor and the joy he radiated.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), the cousin and son-in-law of the Prophet (ﷺ), was renowned for his vast knowledge and wisdom. His cheerful and affable nature made him approachable to people from all walks of life. He would greet everyone with a warm smile and kind words, making them feel comfortable in his presence. This quality of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is beautifully captured in this Hadith, emphasizing the importance of cheerfulness in building strong and lasting companionships.
When we embody cheerfulness, we create an environment that is conducive to love, understanding, and cooperation. A cheerful disposition can uplift the spirits of those around us, making them feel valued and appreciated. It can also serve as a means of inviting others towards the path of Islam, as people are naturally drawn to those who exude positivity and happiness.
Conversely, a negative and gloomy attitude can repel others and hinder the growth of meaningful relationships. The Quran warns against spreading negativity and causing discord among believers. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah says,
O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them.
This verse reminds us to avoid belittling or mocking others, as it can damage relationships and create animosity.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the importance of cheerfulness in fostering strong and meaningful companionships. By embodying a positive demeanor, we can attract like-minded individuals and create an atmosphere of love and harmony. Let us strive to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble companions, who spread joy and happiness wherever they went. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate cheerfulness in our lives and be a source of happiness for others.
