اَلفَقْرُ زينَةُ الإيمانِ۔
Poverty is the adornment of faith.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Poverty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الفَقْرُ زينَةُ الإيمانِ", which translates to
Poverty is the adornment of faith.
This impactful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the spiritual significance of poverty in the realm of faith.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by exploring the key words and concepts it encompasses. The word (faqr) "فَقْرُ" refers to poverty or destitution, while (zeenah) "زينَةُ" means adornment or beauty. Finally, (al-iman) "الإيمانِ" signifies faith or belief in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
To understand the wisdom behind Imam Ali's statement, we turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Anfal, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:24)
O you who have believed, respond to Allah and to the Messenger when he calls you to that which gives you life. And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart and that to Him you will be gathered.
This verse emphasizes the importance of responding to the call of Allah and His Messenger, as it is through this obedience that our hearts truly come alive. It is in moments of poverty and hardship that we are often most receptive to this call, as our worldly attachments and distractions are stripped away. In this state of destitution, our hearts become more open to the guidance of Allah and His Messenger, leading to a deeper connection with our faith.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 47:31)
And We will surely test you until We make evident those who strive among you and the patient, and We will test your affairs.
This verse reminds us that trials and tests are an integral part of our journey in this world. Poverty, as one form of trial, can serve as a means to purify our faith and strengthen our character. When faced with financial difficulties, we are compelled to rely solely on Allah's provisions and seek His help. This reliance on Allah fosters humility, patience, and trust in His divine plan, all of which are essential components of a strong and sincere faith.
Imam Ali's statement,
Poverty is the adornment of faith,
encourages us to view poverty not as a burden, but as a means to beautify our faith. It reminds us that material wealth and abundance can often lead to arrogance, greed, and a false sense of self-sufficiency. On the other hand, poverty humbles us, reminding us of our dependence on Allah and our need for His mercy and guidance.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself exemplified this understanding of poverty as an adornment of faith. Despite his vast knowledge, wisdom, and leadership, he chose a life of simplicity and detachment from worldly possessions. His poverty was not a reflection of his lack, but rather a testament to his unwavering trust in Allah and his commitment to the principles of Islam.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ),
Poverty is the adornment of faith,
reminds us of the spiritual significance of poverty in the realm of faith. It teaches us that in moments of destitution, our hearts become more receptive to the call of Allah and His Messenger. It encourages us to view poverty as an opportunity for growth, humility, and reliance on Allah. May we strive to embrace the beauty of poverty in our faith and seek closeness to Allah through all circumstances.
