Evil is impudence.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Evil And The Wicked)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الشَّرُّ وَقاحَةٌ۔" which translates to "Evil is impudence." Let us delve into the meaning of this wise utterance in light of the Quran.

The word (sharr) "شَّرُّ" refers to evil or wickedness. It encompasses all actions, thoughts, and intentions that are morally wrong and harmful. It is the opposite of goodness and righteousness. In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us against evil and encourages us to strive for goodness. In Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 197, Allah says,

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa. So fear Me, O you of understanding.

The word (waqaha) "وَقاحَةٌ" means impudence or audacity. It refers to the act of behaving or speaking in a disrespectful and insolent manner, showing a lack of regard for others and their rights. It is a characteristic that goes against the teachings of Islam, which emphasize humility, respect, and kindness towards others. In Surah Al-Hujurat, verse 11, Allah says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

Imam Ali's statement highlights the inherent connection between evil and impudence. Evil actions often stem from a lack of respect for others and a disregard for their rights. When one becomes audacious and insolent, they are more likely to engage in wicked deeds that harm themselves and those around them.

This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims of the importance of embodying humility, respect, and kindness in all aspects of life. It calls upon us to reflect on our behavior and strive to avoid impudence, as it is a gateway to evil. By cultivating a sense of humility and respect, we can protect ourselves from falling into sinful actions and maintain harmonious relationships with others.

Moreover, this Hadith also highlights the significance of knowledge and wisdom in combating evil and impudence. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, which guided his actions and decisions. Through his teachings and example, he emphasized the importance of seeking knowledge and using it to promote goodness and righteousness.

In Surah Al-Zumar, verse 9, Allah says,

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

This verse emphasizes the superiority of knowledge and the responsibility that comes with it. It is through knowledge that we can differentiate between good and evil, and it is through wisdom that we can navigate the complexities of life in a righteous manner.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "الشَّرُّ وَقاحَةٌ۔" serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to avoid impudence and to strive for goodness in all aspects of life. It highlights the connection between evil and a lack of respect for others, and emphasizes the importance of knowledge and wisdom in combating evil. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all to righteousness and protect us from evil and impudence.
