بِحُسْنِ التَّوَكُّلِ يُسْتَدَلُّ عَلى حُسْنِ الإيقانِ۔
It is through the strength of one’s trust in Allah that the level of one’s faith is evinced.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Putting Trust In Allah)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
بِحُسْنِ التَّوَكُّلِ يُسْتَدَلُّ عَلى حُسْنِ الإيقانِ۔
This can be translated as,
It is through the strength of one’s trust in Allah that the level of one’s faith is evinced.
To understand this Hadith, let us first explore the key words. "التَّوَكُّلِ" refers to trust, reliance, and complete dependence on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It is a state of surrendering one's affairs to Allah, acknowledging His power and wisdom, and recognizing that He is the ultimate source of all outcomes. "الإيقانِ" refers to faith, conviction, and certainty in Allah's existence, attributes, and promises.
The Hadith emphasizes that the level of one's faith can be measured by the strength of their trust in Allah. In other words, the depth of our reliance on Allah is a reflection of the strength of our faith. This concept is beautifully supported by numerous verses from the Quran.
Allah says in Surah At-Talaq (65:3),
And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him.
This verse highlights the importance of trust in Allah, assuring us that if we place our reliance solely on Him, He will be enough to fulfill our needs and protect us from harm. This reliance on Allah is a manifestation of our faith in Him.
Furthermore, in Surah Az-Zumar (39:62), Allah says,
Allah is the best of guardians, and He is the most merciful of the merciful.
This verse reminds us that Allah is the ultimate guardian and protector, and by placing our trust in Him, we acknowledge His infinite mercy and care for His creation. This trust in Allah strengthens our faith and deepens our connection with Him.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and understanding of Islam, highlights the significance of trust in Allah as a means to strengthen our faith. When we wholeheartedly rely on Allah, we demonstrate our conviction in His power, wisdom, and ability to guide us through any situation. This trust is not blind, but rather built upon the firm foundation of knowing Allah's attributes and His promises in the Quran.
Practically, when faced with challenges or uncertainties, a person with strong trust in Allah will turn to Him in prayer, seeking His guidance and support. They will have the confidence that Allah will provide a way out, even if the solution is not immediately apparent. This trust in Allah's plan and His ability to bring about the best outcome is a testament to their unwavering faith.
Moreover, the strength of our trust in Allah has far-reaching consequences. It instills a sense of tranquility and peace in our hearts, knowing that we are not alone in our struggles. It allows us to let go of our worries and anxieties, as we place our complete reliance on the All-Powerful and All-Knowing. This trust also enables us to face challenges with resilience and patience, knowing that Allah's wisdom is beyond our comprehension.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the level of our faith is reflected in the strength of our trust in Allah. By relying on Him completely, we demonstrate our conviction in His power, wisdom, and ability to guide us through all circumstances. This trust in Allah strengthens our faith, brings us closer to Him, and grants us peace and tranquility in the face of challenges. May Allah grant us the ability to cultivate a strong trust in Him and increase our faith.
