(Ghurar al-Hikam: Struggling Against The Self (Jihad An-Nafs))

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

جِهادُ الهَوى ثَمَنُ الجَنَّةِ۔

This can be translated as,

Struggling against vain desires is the price of Paradise.

Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. (jihad) "جِهادُ" refers to the struggle or effort made to overcome obstacles and challenges. It encompasses both physical and spiritual struggles. (al-hawa) "الهَوى" refers to vain desires or whims that lead one away from the path of righteousness. And (thaman) "ثَمَنُ" means the price or cost.

To understand the significance of struggling against vain desires, we can turn to the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:197),

And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (piety).

This verse emphasizes the importance of preparing ourselves for the journey towards Paradise. Just as we gather provisions for a physical journey, we must also equip ourselves with piety to overcome the temptations of our desires.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:77), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

But seek, through that which Allah has given you, the home of the Hereafter; and [yet], do not forget your share of the world.

This verse reminds us that while we strive for the rewards of the Hereafter, we should not neglect our responsibilities in this world. Struggling against our vain desires requires a balance between seeking the pleasure of Allah and fulfilling our worldly obligations.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith highlights the significance of this struggle. It serves as a reminder that Paradise is not attained easily; it requires continuous effort and self-discipline. Just as a price must be paid to acquire something valuable, the price of Paradise is the struggle against our vain desires.

When we reflect on this Hadith, we realize that it encompasses various aspects of our lives. It urges us to resist the temptations of our lower selves, such as greed, jealousy, and lust. It encourages us to strive for self-improvement and to resist the distractions that hinder our spiritual growth.

The struggle against vain desires is not a one-time effort; it is a lifelong journey. It requires constant self-reflection, self-control, and seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By resisting our vain desires, we purify our hearts and strengthen our connection with Allah. This struggle leads to self-transformation and ultimately, the attainment of Paradise.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) exemplified this struggle throughout his life. His knowledge and wisdom enabled him to recognize and overcome his own vain desires. He was known for his impeccable self-control and his ability to resist worldly temptations. His unwavering commitment to the path of righteousness serves as an inspiration for all Muslims.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that struggling against our vain desires is the price we must pay to attain Paradise. It emphasizes the importance of self-discipline, self-reflection, and seeking the pleasure of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By resisting our vain desires, we purify our souls and strengthen our connection with the Divine. May Allah grant us the strength and guidance to overcome our vain desires and attain the eternal bliss of Paradise.
