مِنْ شَرَفِ الأعْراقِ كَرَمُ الأخْلاقِ۔
Good manners are from the [signs of] honourable descent.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Descent And Lineage)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Good manners are from the [signs of] honourable descent.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of good character and noble behavior, which are indicative of a person's noble lineage and high moral standing.
Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word "sharaf" refers to honor or nobility, while "a'raaq" refers to lineage or ancestry. "Karam" means good manners or noble qualities, and "akhlaq" refers to character or behavior.
To further understand the significance of good manners as a sign of honorable descent, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),
O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true nobility lies in righteousness and piety, not in worldly status or lineage. It is the inner qualities and actions that determine a person's true worth. Good manners, which encompass kindness, humility, patience, and honesty, are an integral part of righteousness and are thus a reflection of one's noble character.
Another verse that supports the importance of good manners is found in Surah Al-Qalam (68:4), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) by saying,
And indeed, you are of a great moral character.
This verse highlights the exceptional character of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), who serves as the ultimate role model for all Muslims. His exemplary manners and noble conduct are a testament to the importance of good character in Islam. Following in his footsteps, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) also possessed unparalleled knowledge and wisdom, which further reinforces the significance of his statement in the Hadith.
The consequences of embodying good manners are profound. When Muslims exhibit noble behavior and treat others with kindness and respect, they create an atmosphere of harmony and unity within society. Good manners foster strong relationships, build trust, and promote a sense of belonging among individuals. They also serve as a means of inviting others to Islam, as people are often drawn to the beauty of good character.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of constantly striving to improve our manners and conduct. It is not enough to simply claim noble lineage or profess faith; our actions must align with our words. By embodying good manners, we not only honor our own noble descent but also uphold the teachings of Islam and honor the legacy of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble progeny.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes that good manners are a reflection of honorable descent. It reminds us that true nobility lies in righteousness and piety, and that our character and behavior are the true indicators of our worth. By embodying good manners, we not only honor our own lineage but also contribute to a harmonious and virtuous society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all in cultivating and nurturing good manners in our lives.
