Hadith #7013

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The intellect is a friend that has been cut-off.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this wise utterance in light of the Quran.

Firstly, let us understand the key words in this Hadith. The word (intellect) "عَقْلُ" refers to the faculty of reason and understanding that distinguishes humans from other creatures. It is the ability to think, comprehend, and make rational decisions. The word (friend) "صَدِيقٌ" signifies a close companion or ally, someone who supports and guides us. And finally, the word (cut-off) "مَقْطُوعٌ" implies a separation or detachment.

To comprehend the true meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of intellect and reason in numerous verses. For instance, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:164), Allah says,

Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.

This verse highlights the signs of Allah's creation that are meant to be pondered upon and understood by those who possess intellect.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:43), Allah says,

And these examples We present to the people, but none will understand them except those of knowledge.

This verse emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding, which are closely linked to the intellect. It implies that true comprehension and insight can only be attained through the proper use of one's intellect.

Now, coming back to the Hadith, Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) describes the intellect as a

friend that has been cut-off.

On the other hand, when the intellect is nurtured and utilized properly, it becomes a steadfast companion and guide. It enables us to make informed decisions, seek knowledge, and understand the signs of Allah's creation. By utilizing our intellect, we can navigate through the complexities of life and strive towards spiritual growth and enlightenment.
