مَنْ رَكِبَ الهَوى أدْرَكَ العَمى۔
Whoever embarks on vain desire is afflicted by blindness.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Vain Desire)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
مَنْ رَكِبَ الهَوَى أدْرَكَ العَمَى
which translates to
Whoever embarks on vain desire is afflicted by blindness.
This thought-provoking Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the consequences of following one's base desires and whims, which ultimately leads to spiritual blindness and ignorance.
To better understand the significance of this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of the key words. (rakiba) "رَكِبَ" means to embark or ride upon, implying an active engagement with one's desires. (al-hawa) "الهَوَى" refers to vain desires or whims, which are often driven by the lower self and disconnected from the guidance of Allah. And finally, (adraka) "أدْرَكَ" means to be afflicted or overtaken by something.
The Quran provides us with several verses that shed light on the concept of following one's vain desires and the consequences it brings. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns us in Surah Al-Jathiyah (45:23),
Have you seen he who has taken as his god his [own] desire, and Allah has sent him astray due to knowledge and has set a seal upon his hearing and his heart and put over his vision a veil? So who will guide him after Allah? Then will you not be reminded?
This verse emphasizes that those who prioritize their own desires over the guidance of Allah are led astray, and their hearts and minds become veiled from the truth.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:50), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,
But if they do not respond to you - then know that they only follow their [own] desires. And who is more astray than one who follows his desire without guidance from Allah? Indeed, Allah does not guide the wrongdoing people.
This verse highlights the misguided nature of those who prioritize their own desires over the guidance of Allah, emphasizing that they are led further away from the truth.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious of their desires and to prioritize the guidance of Allah over their own whims. When individuals become slaves to their desires, they lose sight of the truth and are blinded by their own ignorance. This blindness manifests in various aspects of their lives, including their understanding of religious teachings, their ability to make sound decisions, and their overall spiritual well-being.
For example, when one becomes consumed by materialistic desires, they may prioritize wealth and worldly possessions over the pursuit of knowledge and spiritual growth. This leads to a neglect of their intellectual and spiritual development, causing them to remain ignorant and spiritually stagnant. Similarly, when one allows their desires to dictate their actions, they may engage in sinful behavior and disregard the moral teachings of Islam. This not only distances them from Allah but also leads to negative consequences in this world and the hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautiful saying serves as a reminder for Muslims to constantly reflect on their intentions and desires. It urges us to seek knowledge, strive for self-discipline, and align our actions with the teachings of the Quran and the Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). By doing so, we can safeguard ourselves from the blindness that accompanies following vain desires and instead attain spiritual enlightenment and guidance from Allah.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims to be cautious of their desires and to prioritize the guidance of Allah over their own whims. By recognizing the consequences of following vain desires, we can strive to overcome our base desires and seek spiritual enlightenment and guidance from Allah. May Allah protect us from the blindness of vain desires and grant us the ability to follow the path of righteousness.
