Hadith #9675

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ السَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

A person’s value is indicated by his knowledge and intellect.

This impactful saying emphasizes the significance of knowledge and intellect in determining the worth of an individual. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (qīmati) "قيمَةِ" in the Hadith refers to the value or worth of a person. It signifies the importance and significance that an individual holds in society and in the eyes of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This value is not based on material possessions, social status, or physical appearance, but rather on the possession of knowledge and intellect.

The term (ʿilmuhu) "عِلْمُهُ" in the Hadith refers to knowledge. Knowledge is a fundamental aspect of Islam, and it encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge and acquiring wisdom. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Zumar (39:9),

Are those who know equal to those who do not know?

Furthermore, the word (ʿaqluhu) "عَقْلُهُ" in the Hadith refers to intellect or rationality. Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding.

Their lack of knowledge and intellect can hinder their personal growth, limit their potential, and prevent them from fulfilling their responsibilities as Muslims.

The consequences of neglecting knowledge and intellect are evident in both individual and societal contexts. Ignorance breeds intolerance, injustice, and division. It hinders progress, stifles innovation, and perpetuates harmful practices. On the other hand, knowledge and intellect promote unity, justice, and compassion. They empower individuals to contribute positively to society, seek solutions to societal issues, and promote the well-being of all.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we are reminded of the importance of continuously seeking knowledge and developing our intellect. As Muslims, we are encouraged to engage in lifelong learning, to study the Quran and the teachings of our Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and to acquire knowledge in various fields.
