اَلوِلاياتُ مَضامِيرُ الرِّجالِ۔
Sovereignties are the arenas of men.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Government And Sovereignty)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الوِلاياتُ مَضامِيرُ الرِّجالِ۔" This can be translated as,
Sovereignties are the arenas of men.
Let us delve into the meaning of this statement in light of the Quran.
The word (al-wilayat) "الوِلاياتُ" refers to the concept of authority, guardianship, or sovereignty. It signifies the position of leadership and the responsibility that comes with it. The term (madamir) "مَضامِيرُ" means arenas or fields, indicating the places where individuals exercise their power and influence.
To understand the significance of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 21:73)
And We made them leaders guiding by Our command.
This verse highlights the divine appointment of leaders who are entrusted with the responsibility of guiding and governing the people. It emphasizes the importance of righteous leadership in society.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 12:21)
And Allah has full power and control over His affairs, but most of mankind do not know.
This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate authority and has complete control over all matters. However, He has granted humans the opportunity to exercise their own authority within the boundaries set by Him.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement highlights the significance of leadership and the role it plays in shaping society. Sovereignties, or positions of authority, are like arenas where individuals showcase their abilities and make a lasting impact. Just as an arena is a place of competition and display of skills, leadership positions provide individuals with the opportunity to demonstrate their capabilities, make decisions, and influence the lives of others.
However, this Hadith also carries a enlightening message. It reminds us that the exercise of power and authority should be in accordance with the teachings of Islam and guided by the principles of justice, compassion, and righteousness. The Quran repeatedly emphasizes the importance of just leadership. In Surah Al-Hadid, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 57:25)
Indeed, We sent Our messengers with clear proofs and sent down with them the Scripture and the balance that the people may maintain [their affairs] in justice.
This verse highlights the divine expectation for leaders to establish justice and maintain balance in society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to strive for positions of leadership and influence, not for personal gain or power, but to serve the community and uphold the principles of justice and righteousness. It encourages Muslims to actively participate in shaping society, utilizing their skills and abilities to make a positive impact.
Moreover, this Hadith also reminds us of the importance of seeking knowledge and wisdom. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and his statement reflects the understanding that true leadership requires intellectual and spiritual growth. The Quran encourages Muslims to seek knowledge and reflect upon its teachings. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 39:9)
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?'
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge and emphasizes the importance of intellectual development.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) "الوِلاياتُ مَضامِيرُ الرِّجالِ۔" conveys the enlightening message that positions of authority and leadership are arenas where individuals can showcase their abilities and make a lasting impact on society. However, it also reminds us of the responsibility that comes with leadership, emphasizing the importance of justice, compassion, and righteousness. Muslims are encouraged to actively seek positions of leadership, guided by the teachings of Islam and motivated by the desire to serve the community. Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reminder of the importance of seeking knowledge and wisdom, as true leadership requires intellectual and spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and guidance to fulfill our roles as leaders in our respective arenas.
