Hadith #7881

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

عَلَيْكَ بِالوَفاءِ فَإنَّهُ أوْقى(أوفى) جُنَّة۔

This can be translated as,

You must espouse loyalty, for it is the most protective shield.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (wafa) "وَفَاء" means loyalty, faithfulness, and fulfilling one's commitments. It encompasses sincerity, trustworthiness, and being true to one's word. The word (awqa) "أوْقى(أوفى)" is derived from the root word (wafa) "وَفَى", which means to fulfill, complete, or be true to something. It signifies the idea of loyalty being the most comprehensive and effective means of protection.

To understand the significance of loyalty as a protective shield, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:76),

Indeed, whoever fulfills his commitments and fears Allah - then indeed, Allah loves those who fear Him.

This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling one's commitments and being loyal, as it is an act that is beloved to Allah.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah (5:1), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, fulfill [all] contracts.

This verse highlights the obligation upon believers to fulfill their contracts and commitments, which is an essential aspect of loyalty.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith encourages Muslims to embrace loyalty as a protective shield. Loyalty acts as a safeguard against betrayal, deceit, and discord. Moreover, loyalty has far-reaching consequences. It not only benefits individuals and communities in this world but also has a profound impact on the Hereafter. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) promises great rewards for those who remain loyal and fulfill their commitments. In Surah Al-Ahzab (33:23), Allah says,

Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration.

This verse highlights the loyalty of the believers who remained steadfast in their commitment to Allah, even in the face of adversity. Their loyalty was not limited to words but was demonstrated through their actions and sacrifices. Allah praises such individuals and promises them a great reward.
