قَدِّمُوا بَعْضاً يَكُنْ لَكُمْ، ولاتُخَلِّفُوا كُلاًّ فَيَكُونَ عَلَيْكُمْ۔
Send forth some [of your wealth] as it will be [beneficial] for you [in the Hereafter], and do not leave all of it behind as this will become a burden for you.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Wealth And Riches)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
قَدِّمُوا بَعْضاً يَكُنْ لَكُمْ، ولاتُخَلِّفُوا كُلاًّ فَيَكُونَ عَلَيْكُمْ۔
This Hadith encourages us to send forth a portion of our wealth, as it will be beneficial for us in the Hereafter. It also warns against leaving all of our wealth behind, as it will become a burden for us.
To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, let us delve into the meanings of some key words. The word (qaddimoo) "قَدِّمُوا" means to send forth or advance. It implies taking proactive steps to give a portion of our wealth for the sake of Allah. The word (ba'dan) "بَعْضاً" refers to a portion or some of our wealth. It emphasizes the importance of not withholding everything, but rather giving a portion of what we possess. On the other hand, the word (tukhallifoo) "تُخَلِّفُوا" means to leave behind or neglect. It cautions against neglecting our duty to give in charity and accumulating all of our wealth.
In the Quran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of giving in charity and spending in His cause. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:245)
Who is it that would loan Allah a goodly loan so He may multiply it for him many times over?
This verse highlights the concept of giving a portion of our wealth for the sake of Allah, with the promise of multiplied rewards in return. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hadid, Allah says, (57:10)
And what is the matter with you that you do not spend in the cause of Allah?
This verse reminds us of the obligation to spend in the cause of Allah and not to neglect this duty.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a practical reminder of the teachings of the Quran. By sending forth a portion of our wealth, we not only fulfill our duty towards Allah but also benefit ourselves in the Hereafter. When we give in charity, we purify our wealth and detach ourselves from the love of material possessions. This act of selflessness and generosity brings us closer to Allah and strengthens our faith.
Moreover, by giving a portion of our wealth, we contribute to the well-being of society. Our charity can alleviate the suffering of the poor, provide education to the needy, and support various charitable causes. It is through our collective efforts that we can bring about positive change and create a just and compassionate society.
On the other hand, if we neglect our duty to give in charity and accumulate all of our wealth, it can become a burden for us. Hoarding wealth and being attached to material possessions can lead to arrogance, greed, and a neglect of the needs of others. This accumulation of wealth without sharing can create a sense of inequality and injustice in society. It is important to remember that wealth is a trust from Allah, and we are accountable for how we use it.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) urges us to send forth a portion of our wealth for the sake of Allah, as it will be beneficial for us in the Hereafter. It reminds us of the importance of giving in charity and not neglecting this duty. By doing so, we purify our wealth, strengthen our faith, and contribute to the well-being of society. Conversely, neglecting our duty to give can lead to the burden of accumulated wealth and a neglect of the needs of others. May Allah guide us to be generous and selfless in our actions and grant us the ability to fulfill our duty towards Him and our fellow human beings.
