اَلْحَياءُ يَصُدُّ عَنْ فِعْلِ القَبيحِ۔
Modesty prevents one from ugly actions.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Modesty And Shame)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings be upon Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, as well as his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
الحياء يصد عن فعل القبيح
which translates to
Modesty prevents one from ugly actions.
This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of modesty in restraining oneself from engaging in immoral and reprehensible deeds.
The word (al-haya) "الحياء" refers to modesty, shyness, and a sense of shame. It is a noble characteristic that restrains a person from indulging in actions that are considered morally wrong or socially unacceptable. Modesty is a virtue that is highly regarded in Islam, as it promotes humility, self-restraint, and a sense of moral consciousness.
To further understand the significance of modesty in Islam, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:26),
O children of Adam, We have bestowed upon you clothing to conceal your private parts and as adornment. But the clothing of righteousness - that is best. That is from the signs of Allah that perhaps they will remember.
This verse emphasizes the importance of clothing as a means of modesty, not only in terms of physical covering but also in terms of righteousness and moral conduct. Modesty in dress and behavior is a reflection of one's inner piety and consciousness of Allah's commandments.
Furthermore, in Surah An-Nur (24:30), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) instructs the believers,
Tell the believing men to reduce [some] of their vision and guard their private parts. That is purer for them. Indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what they do.
This verse highlights the importance of lowering one's gaze and guarding one's modesty, not only for men but for all believers.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement regarding modesty serves as a reminder for Muslims to be conscious of their actions and to refrain from engaging in immoral and sinful behavior. Modesty acts as a shield, protecting individuals from falling into the traps of temptation and sin.
For example, a person who possesses modesty will be less likely to engage in backbiting, slander, or any form of harmful speech. Modesty also prevents one from engaging in illicit relationships, theft, dishonesty, and other vices that are considered morally reprehensible.
Modesty not only safeguards an individual's moral character but also contributes to the overall well-being of society. When individuals practice modesty, they create an environment of respect, trust, and decency. This, in turn, fosters harmonious relationships, promotes social cohesion, and prevents the spread of corruption and immorality.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of modesty in Islam. Modesty acts as a protective shield, preventing individuals from engaging in immoral and reprehensible actions. By practicing modesty, Muslims uphold their moral values, maintain their integrity, and contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and guidance to embody the virtue of modesty in all aspects of our lives.
