Hidden opinions are revealed through consultation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Opinions And The Opinonated)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
خَوافِي الآراءِ تَكْشِفُهَا المُشاوَرَةُ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
Hidden opinions are revealed through consultation.
Let us delve into the meaning of some important words in this Hadith. The word (khawafi) "خَوافِي" refers to hidden or concealed opinions. These are thoughts or ideas that individuals may have but choose not to express openly. The word (al-arā') "الآراء" means opinions or viewpoints. And finally, the term (al-mushāwarah) "المُشاوَرَةُ" refers to consultation or seeking advice from others.
The importance of consultation is emphasized in both the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ). Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Imran (3:159),
So by mercy from Allah, [O Muhammad], you were lenient with them. And if you had been rude [in speech] and harsh in heart, they would have disbanded from about you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them and consult them in the matter. And when you have decided, then rely upon Allah. Indeed, Allah loves those who rely [upon Him].
This verse highlights the importance of consultation in decision-making. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) was advised to consult his companions and seek their opinions before making a decision. This not only fosters a sense of inclusivity and unity within the community but also ensures that various perspectives are considered.
Another verse that supports the concept of consultation is found in Surah Ash-Shura (42:38), where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And those who have responded to their lord and established prayer and whose affair is [determined by] consultation among themselves, and from what We have provided them, they spend.
This verse highlights the characteristics of the believers who respond to their Lord, establish prayer, and make decisions through consultation. It emphasizes the importance of collective decision-making and seeking advice from others.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his wisdom and knowledge, emphasized the significance of consultation. He understood that hidden opinions can only be revealed through the process of consultation. When individuals come together to discuss and exchange ideas, they can uncover perspectives that may have otherwise remained concealed. This leads to a more comprehensive understanding of a matter and allows for better decision-making.
The practice of consultation has numerous benefits. It promotes unity and harmony within the community, as everyone's voice is heard and valued. It also prevents the concentration of power in the hands of a few individuals, as decisions are made collectively. Furthermore, consultation fosters a culture of open communication, where individuals feel comfortable expressing their opinions and contributing to the betterment of society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of consultation in uncovering hidden opinions. By seeking advice from others and engaging in collective decision-making, we can benefit from the diverse perspectives and wisdom of the community. This practice is not only supported by the Quran but also exemplified by the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) and his noble companions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us to always seek consultation and make decisions that are beneficial for ourselves and our communities.
