خَوْفُ اللّهُ يَجْلُبُ لِمُسْتَشْعِرِهِ الأمانَ۔
Fear of Allah brings security for the one who is filled with it.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Fear)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Fear of Allah brings security for the one who is filled with it.
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (khawf) "خَوْفُ" in Arabic refers to fear or awe. It is a feeling of reverence and respect that arises from recognizing the greatness and power of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This fear is not a paralyzing terror, but rather a sense of humility and submission before the Creator.
The word (Allah) "اللّهُ" is the name of the Supreme Being, the One God who is worthy of worship and obedience. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the source of all power, knowledge, and mercy. His fear is an essential aspect of our faith and a means to attain security and tranquility.
The phrase (yajlubu limustash'irihi al-aman) "يَجْلُبُ لِمُسْتَشْعِرِهِ الأمانَ" can be translated as
brings security for the one who is filled with it.
This implies that when a person truly fears Allah and lives in accordance with His commands, they will find inner peace, contentment, and protection from harm.
The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of fearing Allah and the blessings that come with it. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 65:2-3)
And whoever fears Allah - He will make for him a way out and will provide for him from where he does not expect. And whoever relies upon Allah - then He is sufficient for him
This verse highlights that when a person fears Allah, He will guide them through difficulties and provide for them from unexpected sources. It demonstrates the security and protection that comes with a sincere and deep-rooted fear of Allah.
Another verse that supports the exegesis of this Hadith is found in Surah Yunus, where Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 7:201)
Indeed, those who fear Allah - when an impulse touches them from Satan, they remember [Him] and at once they have insight
This verse illustrates that those who fear Allah are granted insight and clarity of thought. They are able to recognize and resist the whispers of Satan, thus protecting themselves from falling into sin. This further reinforces the idea that fear of Allah brings security and protection from spiritual harm.
Reflecting on the Hadith, we can understand that true fear of Allah is not a source of anxiety or distress, but rather a source of comfort and tranquility. When we fear Allah, we are motivated to adhere to His commands, avoid sinful actions, and strive for righteousness. This fear acts as a shield, guarding us from the harmful consequences of our own actions and protecting us from the temptations of the world.
Furthermore, this Hadith reminds us that the fear of Allah is not limited to a superficial or ritualistic practice. It is a state of the heart, a deep-rooted awareness of Allah's presence and a recognition of His power and authority. It is this genuine fear that brings about true security and peace in our lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that fear of Allah is not a burden, but rather a means to attain security and tranquility. By truly fearing Allah and living in accordance with His commands, we find protection from harm, guidance in times of difficulty, and inner peace. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to cultivate a sincere fear of Him and to experience the security and peace that comes with it.
