إذَا اسْتَوْلى الفَسادُ عَلَى الزَّمانِ وأهْلِهِ ثُمَ أحْسَنَ الظَّنَّ رَجُلٌ بِرَجُل فَقَدْ غَرَّرَ۔
In an age when corruption prevails over a people, if a man thinks positive of another man then he has put himself in peril.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Conjecture)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
إذَا اسْتَوْلى الفَسادُ عَلَى الزَّمانِ وأهْلِهِ ثُمَ أحْسَنَ الظَّنَّ رَجُلٌ بِرَجُل فَقَدْ غَرَّرَ۔
This Hadith highlights the dangerous consequences of having a positive perception of someone in a time of widespread corruption.
Let us delve into the key words of this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (fasad) "فَسادُ" refers to corruption, decay, or moral degradation. It signifies a state of affairs where righteousness and goodness are replaced by evil and wrongdoing. (azzaman) "الزَّمانِ" refers to the time or era in which this corruption prevails. (ahlihi) "أهْلِهِ" refers to the people who inhabit this era and are affected by its corruption. (ahsana althanna) "أحْسَنَ الظَّنَّ" means to have a positive or good opinion of someone.
To understand the enlightening message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6),
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information and not hastily forming judgments, as it can lead to harm and regret. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:12), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises,
O you who have believed, avoid much [negative] assumption. Indeed, some assumption is sin. And do not spy or backbite each other. Would one of you like to eat the flesh of his brother when dead? You would detest it. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Accepting of repentance and Merciful.
This verse highlights the importance of avoiding negative assumptions and the sinfulness of baseless suspicions.
