Hadith #4754

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure and noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "فِي السَّخاءِ اَلمَحَبَّةُ۔" This can be translated as,

In generosity there is affection.

Let us delve into the profound meanings of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sakhā') "سَخَاء" in this Hadith refers to generosity, which encompasses acts of giving, sharing, and selflessness. It is the quality of being open-handed and magnanimous. Generosity is not limited to material possessions, but also includes giving of one's time, knowledge, and compassion.

The word (mahabbah) "مَحَبَّة" means affection or love. It is a deep and genuine feeling of care and attachment towards others. It is an emotion that fosters unity, understanding, and harmony among individuals and communities.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of generosity and its connection to love and affection. In Surah Al-Insan (76:8-9), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the righteous believers by saying,

And they give food in spite of love for it to the needy, the orphan, and the captive, [Saying], 'We feed you only for the countenance of Allah. We wish not from you reward or gratitude.'

Righteousness is not that you turn your faces toward the east or the west, but [true] righteousness is [in] one who believes in Allah, the Last Day, the angels, the Book, and the prophets and gives wealth, in spite of love for it, to relatives, orphans, the needy, the traveler, those who ask [for help], and for freeing slaves.

This verse emphasizes that true righteousness is not merely in performing rituals, but it is also in acts of generosity and kindness towards others. It is a comprehensive concept that encompasses both belief in Allah and practical actions that benefit society. The mention of giving wealth

in spite of love for it

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the deep connection between generosity and affection.
