كَمْ مِنْ خائِف وَفَدَ بِهِ خَوفُهُ على قَرارَةِ الأمْنِ۔
How many a fearful person has been taken to a place of safety by his fear.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Fearful)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
In this profound Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), he highlights the transformative power of fear. The Arabic word used in the Hadith is (khawfuhu) "خَوفُهُ", which means fear. Fear is a natural human emotion that can either paralyze us or propel us towards growth and improvement. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that fear, when channeled correctly, can lead us to a place of safety and security.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 2:186)
And when My servants ask you concerning Me, indeed I am near. I respond to the invocation of the supplicant when he calls upon Me. So let them respond to Me [by obedience] and believe in Me that they may be [rightly] guided.
This verse reminds us that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is always near and ready to respond to our prayers. When we are in a state of fear, we often turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for help and protection. Our fear becomes a catalyst for seeking His guidance and mercy. Just as a fearful person seeks safety and security, a believer seeks solace and protection in the remembrance of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
Another verse that sheds light on the transformative power of fear is found in Surah Al-Anfal. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 8:26)
And [remember] when you were few and oppressed in the land, fearing that people might abduct you, but He sheltered you, supported you with His victory, and provided you with good things - that you might be grateful.
This verse recounts the early struggles of the Muslims when they were few in number and facing persecution. Their fear of being abducted or harmed was a driving force that led them to seek refuge in Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). It was through their fear and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) that they were ultimately granted safety, support, and victory.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us that fear can be a powerful motivator for seeking protection and guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When we are faced with challenges, uncertainties, or dangers, our fear can push us to turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in sincere supplication and reliance. It is through this fear that we find solace, peace, and a place of safety.
Moreover, this Hadith also emphasizes the importance of recognizing the positive aspects of fear. Fear can serve as a warning sign, alerting us to potential dangers and motivating us to take necessary precautions. It can push us to be more vigilant, cautious, and prepared. Just as a fearful person takes necessary steps to protect themselves, a believer should use fear as a catalyst for personal growth, spiritual development, and seeking closeness to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the transformative power of fear. When channeled correctly, fear can lead us to a place of safety and security, both in this world and the hereafter. It serves as a reminder to turn to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) in times of fear, seeking His guidance, protection, and mercy. Let us embrace fear as a catalyst for growth, and may Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to navigate through our fears with strength and faith.
