Forbearance is the perfection of intellect.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forbearance)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
Forbearance is the perfection of intellect.
This profound statement emphasizes the significance of forbearance in the realm of intellect and wisdom. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The word "ḥilm" in Arabic, which is translated as "forbearance" in English, refers to the quality of being patient, tolerant, and composed in the face of adversity or provocation. It is the ability to control one's emotions and reactions, to exercise restraint, and to respond with wisdom and gentleness. This characteristic is not only highly esteemed in Islam but is also considered a fundamental aspect of human intellect and wisdom.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that highlight the importance of forbearance and its connection to intellect. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:133-134)
And hasten to forgiveness from your Lord and a garden as wide as the heavens and earth, prepared for the righteous who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse emphasizes the virtue of restraining anger and pardoning others, which are essential components of forbearance. It teaches us that those who possess forbearance are beloved to Allah, and they will be rewarded with a vast paradise.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Furqan, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the characteristics of the servants of the Most Merciful, stating, (Quran 25:63)
And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth easily, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.
This verse highlights the importance of responding to ignorance and harshness with words of peace. It exemplifies the quality of forbearance, as those who possess it are able to maintain composure and respond to negativity with kindness and tranquility.
Imam Ali's statement,
Forbearance is the perfection of intellect,
sheds light on the profound connection between forbearance and intellectual maturity. When faced with challenging situations or individuals, a person who exercises forbearance demonstrates their ability to think rationally, consider the consequences of their actions, and respond in a manner that aligns with their higher intellect.
Forbearance is not a sign of weakness, but rather a manifestation of strength and wisdom. It requires self-control, empathy, and a deep understanding of the human condition. By practicing forbearance, one can diffuse conflicts, build bridges of understanding, and promote harmony within society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was a paragon of knowledge and wisdom. His life and teachings exemplified the essence of forbearance. Despite facing numerous trials and tribulations, he displayed remarkable patience and wisdom in his interactions with others. His ability to remain composed and forgiving even in the face of adversity serves as an inspiration for Muslims to cultivate forbearance in their own lives.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that forbearance is not only a virtue highly regarded in Islam but also an integral aspect of intellectual perfection. By exercising forbearance, we can navigate through life's challenges with grace and wisdom, fostering peace and harmony within ourselves and in our interactions with others. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody forbearance and attain the perfection of intellect.
