قيمَةُ كُلِّ امْرِء عَقْلُهُ۔
The value of every person is his intellect.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Human Being)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The value of every person is his intellect.
This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of intellect and knowledge in the life of a Muslim. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
The Arabic word (qīmatu) "قيمَةُ" refers to the worth or value of something. It signifies the significance and importance of a person. The word (kulli) "كُلِّ" means every or each, indicating that this value applies to every individual. The word (amr) "امْرِء" refers to a person, and (aqluhu) "عَقْلُهُ" means his intellect or reasoning ability.
The Quranic verses beautifully reinforce the significance of intellect in the life of a Muslim. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of knowledge and understanding. In Surah Al-Zumar (39:9), Allah says,
Are those who know equal to those who do not know?
This verse highlights the distinction between those who possess knowledge and those who lack it. It implies that knowledge and intellect elevate a person's worth and status.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Zumar (39:18), Allah states,
Those who listen to the word, then follow the best of it. Those are the ones whom Allah has guided, and those are the ones possessed of understanding.
This verse emphasizes the importance of listening and understanding the word of Allah. It highlights that true guidance comes to those who possess intellect and use it to discern the best course of action.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that our worth as individuals lies in our intellect. It implies that the value of a person is not determined by their wealth, social status, or physical appearance, but by their intellectual capacity and the knowledge they possess. Intellect enables us to comprehend the teachings of Islam, make informed decisions, and contribute positively to society.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) himself was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom. His intellect was unparalleled, and he was renowned for his ability to provide profound insights and solutions to complex matters. His teachings and sayings continue to inspire and guide Muslims to this day.
The consequences of neglecting intellect are evident in society. When individuals disregard the importance of knowledge and critical thinking, they become susceptible to ignorance, misinformation, and manipulation. They may fall prey to false ideologies, harmful practices, and misguided beliefs. On the other hand, those who prioritize intellect and seek knowledge are better equipped to navigate the challenges of life, make sound judgments, and contribute positively to the world around them.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the responsibility we have as Muslims to seek knowledge, cultivate our intellect, and continuously strive for personal growth. It encourages us to engage in lifelong learning, study the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), and seek guidance from the wisdom of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). By doing so, we enhance our worth as individuals and fulfill our purpose as servants of Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the value of intellect in the life of a Muslim. It reminds us that our worth is not determined by external factors but by the knowledge and understanding we possess. By prioritizing intellect and seeking knowledge, we can fulfill our purpose as Muslims and contribute positively to society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bless us with wisdom and guide us on the path of knowledge.
