— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Good Character)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure and noble family, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his righteous companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

عَلَيْكَ بِحُسْنِ الخُلقِ فَإنَّهُ يُكْسِبُكَ المَحَبَّةَ۔

This can be translated as,

You must adopt a good character for this will earn you adoration [of others].

Let us delve into the profound wisdom behind this statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quranic teachings.

Firstly, it is important to understand the key words in this Hadith. "حُسْنِ الخُلقِ" refers to good character or moral conduct. It encompasses virtues such as honesty, kindness, patience, humility, and justice. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of cultivating and nurturing these qualities within ourselves.

The Quran also emphasizes the significance of good character. In Surah Al-Qalam, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) describes the Prophet Muhammad () by saying, (Quran 68:4)

And indeed, you are of a great moral character.

This verse highlights the exemplary character of the Prophet () and serves as a reminder for all Muslims to strive towards developing similar traits.

Furthermore, the Quran teaches us that good character is not only pleasing to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but it also attracts the love and admiration of others. In Surah Al-Qasas, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 7:56)

And cause not corruption upon the earth after its reformation. And invoke Him in fear and aspiration. Indeed, the mercy of Allah is near to the doers of good.

This verse highlights that those who do good deeds and possess good character are recipients of Allah's mercy and blessings.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises us to adopt good character because it not only earns us the love and admiration of others, but it also has far-reaching consequences. When we interact with others with kindness, honesty, and compassion, we create a positive impact on their lives. Our actions have the potential to inspire and influence those around us, leading to a ripple effect of goodness.

For example, when we treat others with respect and dignity, it encourages them to reciprocate the same behavior. This fosters harmonious relationships, strengthens communities, and promotes a sense of unity among Muslims. It also serves as a means of da'wah, as our good character becomes a reflection of the beauty and truth of Islam.

Conversely, if we neglect our character and engage in negative behavior, it can have detrimental effects on our relationships and the overall well-being of society. The Quran warns against arrogance, deceit, and injustice, as they are contrary to the principles of good character. In Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 49:11)

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of cultivating good character. It reminds us that our actions and behavior have a profound impact on ourselves and those around us. By embodying the virtues of honesty, kindness, and justice, we not only earn the love and admiration of others, but we also contribute to the betterment of society. Let us strive to follow the guidance of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and the teachings of the Quran in order to attain the highest levels of moral excellence. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody good character and earn His pleasure.
