(Ghurar al-Hikam: Remedy And Ailment)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

رُبَّما كانَ الدَّواءُ داءً۔

This Hadith can be translated into English as:

Sometimes the remedy is [itself] an ailment.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. The word (dawaa) "دَوَاء" means "remedy" or "medicine," and the word (daa) "دَاء" means "ailment" or "disease." The word (rubbama) "رُبَّما" can be translated as "sometimes" or "perhaps."

To understand the beautiful message of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 286: (2:286)

Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear...

This verse reminds us that Allah, in His infinite wisdom, never places a burden upon us that is beyond our capacity to handle.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Inshirah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says: (94:5-6)

Verily, with hardship, there is relief. Verily, with hardship, there is relief.

This verse assures us that alongside every difficulty, there is ease.

Now, let us reflect on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). Sometimes, the remedy for a particular ailment can itself become an ailment. This means that what initially appears to be a solution or a cure may, in fact, bring about new challenges or difficulties.

To illustrate this concept, let us consider the example of a person who is addicted to a harmful substance. They may seek treatment and be prescribed medication to help them overcome their addiction. However, if they become dependent on this medication or abuse it, the remedy itself becomes a new ailment.

This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to exercise caution and wisdom in seeking remedies for their problems. It encourages us to critically evaluate the potential consequences of the solutions we pursue. We should be mindful that what may seem beneficial at first glance could have unforeseen negative effects.

Furthermore, this Hadith teaches us the importance of relying on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and seeking His guidance in all matters. We should turn to the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () for guidance when faced with challenges and difficulties. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) assures us in Surah Al-Ankabut, verse 69: (29:69)

And those who strive in Our cause, We will surely guide them to Our ways.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us that sometimes the remedy for our problems can become a new problem itself. It urges us to exercise caution and seek guidance from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and His teachings. May Allah grant us the wisdom to discern between true remedies and potential ailments, and may He guide us on the path of righteousness.
