(Ghurar al-Hikam: Truthfulness)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
لايُغْلَبُ مَنْ يَحْتَجُّ بِالصِّدْقِ۔
This can be translated as,
He who argues with [the support of] truth is not defeated.
This beautiful Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the power and strength of truth in any argument or debate.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (yah'tajju) "يَحْتَجُّ" comes from the root word (hajja) "حَجَّ", which means to argue, debate, or present a case. It implies engaging in a discussion or dispute with the intention of proving a point or seeking the truth.
The word (bil-sidq) "بِالصِّدْقِ" means "with truth" or
by means of truth.
It refers to the use of truth as a foundation for one's argument or position. It signifies the importance of basing one's arguments on facts, evidence, and sincerity.
To further comprehend the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of truth and its power in several verses. In Surah Al-Isra (17:81), Allah says,
And say: Truth has come, and falsehood has departed. Indeed is falsehood, [by nature], ever bound to depart.
This verse highlights the inherent strength and ultimate triumph of truth over falsehood.
In Surah Al-Qasas (28:57), Allah states,
And they say, 'If we were to follow the guidance with you, we would be swept from our land.' Have we not established for them a safe sanctuary to which are brought the fruits of all things as provision from Us? But most of them do not know.
This verse reminds us that those who adhere to the truth are provided with divine support and sustenance, even in the face of opposition.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith emphasizes the power of truth in any argument or debate. When one presents their case with truth as their foundation, they become invincible. This does not mean that they will always be victorious in the eyes of others, but rather that they will have the satisfaction of knowing that they have stood firmly on the side of truth.
When someone argues with truth, they are motivated by a sincere desire to seek justice, uphold righteousness, and promote the greater good. Their intentions are pure, and their words are backed by evidence and logic. This approach not only strengthens their position but also exposes the weaknesses and fallacies of opposing arguments.
The consequences of arguing with truth are far-reaching. It leads to the dissemination of knowledge, the correction of misconceptions, and the establishment of justice. It inspires others to reflect, question their own beliefs, and seek the truth for themselves. Moreover, it fosters an environment of intellectual growth and encourages healthy dialogue and debate within the Muslim community.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the immense knowledge and wisdom possessed by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ). His profound understanding of the Quran and his ability to apply its teachings in practical situations allowed him to present arguments that were unassailable. He was known for his eloquence, clarity, and unwavering commitment to truth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us the power of truth in any argument or debate. By basing our arguments on truth and presenting them with sincerity and evidence, we become invincible. This Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to always seek the truth, stand up for justice, and engage in discussions with integrity and knowledge. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to argue with truth and the strength to uphold it in all aspects of our lives.
