Hadith #9243

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

مَنْ دامَ كَسَلُهُ خابَ أمَلُهُ۔

This Hadith can be translated as,

One who is always lazy, his hopes get dashed.

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (kasaluhu) "كَسَلُهُ" in the Hadith refers to laziness or idleness. Laziness is a state of inactivity or reluctance to exert effort. It is a hindrance to progress and can lead to disappointment and unfulfilled aspirations. The word (khaba) "خابَ" means to be disappointed or to have one's hopes shattered. Thus, this Hadith warns us about the consequences of being lazy and the negative impact it can have on our lives.

The Quran provides guidance on the importance of diligence and the detrimental effects of laziness. In Surah Al-Isra, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 17:37)

And do not walk upon the earth exultantly. Indeed, you will never tear the earth [apart], and you will never reach the mountains in height.

This verse highlights the futility of idleness and arrogance, emphasizing the need for humility and continuous effort in our endeavors.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 57:20)

And know that your properties and your children are but a trial and that Allah has with Him a great reward.

This verse reminds us that our worldly possessions and relationships are tests from Allah, and we must actively strive to fulfill our responsibilities and make the most of the opportunities presented to us.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder that laziness can lead to disappointment and unfulfilled hopes. When we become complacent and fail to put in the necessary effort, we hinder our own progress and growth. For example, if a student consistently neglects their studies and relies on luck, they are likely to be disappointed with their academic results. Similarly, if a person is lazy in their professional life, they may miss out on opportunities for career advancement.

Moreover, laziness can also have spiritual consequences. In Surah Al-Asr, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 103:1-3)

By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.

This verse emphasizes the importance of actively seeking righteousness and engaging in good deeds. Laziness in matters of faith can lead to spiritual stagnation and a loss of connection with Allah.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith, we should strive to overcome laziness and cultivate a proactive mindset. We should remember that success and fulfillment come through consistent effort, dedication, and seeking the pleasure of Allah. By being diligent in our studies, work, relationships, and spiritual pursuits, we can avoid disappointment and lead a purposeful and fulfilling life.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) warns us about the consequences of laziness and the disappointment it brings. It reminds us to be proactive, diligent, and conscientious in all aspects of our lives. By seeking inspiration from the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can strive for excellence and avoid the pitfalls of idleness.
