In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

Joking is a [cause of] separation that is followed by rancour.

This Hadith highlights the negative consequences of excessive or inappropriate joking, emphasizing that it can lead to division and animosity among people. To understand the depth and significance of this statement, let us delve into the meanings of the key words in this Hadith.

The word (تَتْبَعُها ضَغِْينَةٌ) "taba'uhadaghinah" translates to "followed by rancour." It indicates that after the initial separation caused by excessive joking, feelings of resentment and animosity can arise. This rancor can poison relationships, leading to deep-seated grudges and enmity among individuals.

To further understand the wisdom behind this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) reminds us in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse emphasizes the importance of refraining from mocking or belittling others, as it can lead to division and undermine the unity of the Muslim community.

Additionally, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns,

And tell My servants to say that which is best. Indeed, Satan induces [dissension] among them. Indeed Satan is ever, to mankind, a clear enemy.

This verse highlights the role of Satan in sowing discord among people. Excessive joking can provide an opportunity for Satan to exploit and manipulate relationships, leading to division and hostility.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be mindful of their words and actions, even in seemingly lighthearted situations.
