Cling to the people of virtue and piety, and request them not compliment you, for indeed excessive praise brings one close to being deceived [about his true status] and being pleased with it causes the displeasure of Allah.

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his purified progeny, and his noble companions.

The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to associate themselves with people of virtue and piety, and to refrain from seeking excessive compliments from them. The Imam warns that excessive praise can lead one to be deceived about their true status, and being pleased with such deception can displease Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this Hadith by examining its key words and their implications. The word (cling) "اِلْصَقْ" signifies a strong attachment and association with individuals who possess qualities of goodness and righteousness. This implies that Muslims should seek the company of those who are morally upright, knowledgeable, and pious. By doing so, they can benefit from their guidance, wisdom, and positive influence.

The phrase (people of virtue and piety) "أهْلِ الخَيْرِ والوَرَعِ" refers to individuals who consistently engage in righteous deeds and exhibit a high level of God-consciousness. These are the individuals who strive to follow the teachings of Islam and uphold its principles in their daily lives. Associating with such individuals can have a profound impact on one's own spiritual growth and development.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises against seeking compliments from these virtuous individuals. The word (compliment) "يُطْرُوكَ" here refers to excessive praise or flattery. The Imam warns that excessive praise can lead to deception, where one becomes deluded about their true status and abilities. This can create a false sense of superiority and arrogance, which is detrimental to one's spiritual well-being.

To support this advice, we can turn to the Quran for further guidance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them.

This verse reminds us not to belittle or mock others, as they may possess qualities and virtues that are superior to our own. Seeking excessive compliments can lead to a false sense of superiority, which goes against the teachings of Islam.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Qasas (28:76), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) warns against arrogance and pride, saying,

Indeed, Qarun was from the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them. And We gave him of treasures whose keys would burden a band of strong men; thereupon his people said to him, 'Do not exult. Indeed, Allah does not like the exultant.'

This verse highlights the consequences of arrogance and pride, as exemplified by Qarun. Seeking excessive compliments can lead to a false sense of superiority, which can ultimately lead to tyranny and oppression.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes that being pleased with this deception can displease Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). When one becomes deluded by excessive praise and starts to believe in their own superiority, they are neglecting the true source of all blessings and success, which is Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). This displeases Allah, as it goes against the fundamental principle of humility and recognizing our dependence on Him.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) advises Muslims to associate themselves with people of virtue and piety, while refraining from seeking excessive compliments. Excessive praise can lead to deception and a false sense of superiority, which is displeasing to Allah. By recognizing the importance of humility and seeking the pleasure of Allah above all else, we can strive for spiritual growth and righteousness. May Allah guide us to follow the teachings of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and grant us the wisdom to choose our companions wisely.
