In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The intellect gives one a sense of familiarity when he is away from his homeland.
This enlightening saying highlights the significance of intellect and its ability to provide solace and comfort to an individual who finds themselves in a foreign land or unfamiliar surroundings.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The key word in this Hadith is (intellect) "عَقْلُ", which refers to the faculty of reasoning, understanding, and discernment. The intellect is a divine gift bestowed upon human beings, enabling them to comprehend and make sense of the world around them. It is through the intellect that we are able to distinguish between right and wrong, make informed decisions, and navigate through the complexities of life.
The Hadith further emphasizes that the intellect provides a (sense of familiarity) "قُرْبَةٌ" to an individual who is away from his homeland. This sense of familiarity can be understood as a feeling of closeness, comfort, and ease that the intellect brings to a person, even in unfamiliar circumstances. It is through the intellect that one is able to adapt, understand, and find solace in new environments, cultures, and communities.
To further understand the significance of intellect and its ability to provide a sense of familiarity, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 3:190)
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hajj, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 22:11)
And among the people is he who worships Allah on an edge. If he is touched by good, he is reassured by it; but if he is struck by trial, he turns on his face [to the other direction]. He has lost [this] world and the Hereafter. That is what is the manifest loss
This verse highlights the importance of intellect in maintaining steadfastness and resilience in the face of trials and tribulations. It is through the intellect that one can find strength and reassurance, even in challenging circumstances.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) encourages Muslims to cultivate and nurture their intellect. By doing so, they can find a sense of familiarity and comfort, regardless of their physical location. The intellect allows individuals to adapt, understand, and appreciate the world around them, enabling them to navigate through unfamiliar territories with ease and confidence.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of intellect in providing a sense of familiarity and comfort, even when one is away from their homeland. By utilizing our intellect and understanding the signs of Allah's creation, we can find solace and adaptability in any environment.
