Hadith #8520

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "رَأْسُ الاِسْتِبْصارِ الفِكْرَةُ۔" This can be translated as,

The cornerstone of insight is contemplation.

Let us delve into the connotation of this statement and explore its significance in light of the Quran.

The word (istibsar) "اِسْتِبْصار" refers to insight, discernment, or the ability to perceive things deeply and accurately. It is the ability to see beyond the surface and grasp the underlying truths. The word (al-fikrah) "الفِكْرَةُ" means contemplation or deep thinking. It involves pondering over matters, reflecting upon their implications, and seeking a deeper understanding.

The Quran emphasizes the importance of contemplation and deep thinking in numerous verses. For example, in Surah Al-Hashr (59:21), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Had We sent down this Quran upon a mountain, you would have seen it humbled and coming apart from fear of Allah. And these examples We present to the people that perhaps they will give thought.

This verse highlights the power of contemplation by presenting the image of a mountain being overwhelmed by the weight of the Quran. It encourages Muslims to ponder over the Quran's message and derive lessons from it.

Similarly, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:44), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,

Allah created the heavens and the earth in truth. Indeed in that is a sign for the believers.

This verse invites Muslims to reflect upon the creation of the heavens and the earth as a means to strengthen their faith and recognize the signs of Allah's existence and power.
