يُمْتَحَنُ الرَّجُلُ بِفِعْلِهِ لابِقَوْلِهِ۔
A person is tested by his actions, not by his words.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Actions And Deeds)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
A person is tested by his actions, not by his words.
This profound statement emphasizes the importance of deeds over mere verbal expressions. Let us delve into the exegesis of this Hadith, exploring its implications and drawing evidence from the Quran.
The word (yumtahanu) "يُمْتَحَنُ" in the Hadith refers to the process of examination or testing. It implies that individuals are evaluated and judged based on their actions. This examination is not limited to the external actions but encompasses the intentions and sincerity behind them as well. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) tests His servants to distinguish between those who truly believe and those who merely claim to believe.
The Hadith further emphasizes that actions hold greater significance than words. It reminds us that our deeds are the true reflection of our character and faith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) repeatedly emphasizes the importance of righteous actions in the Quran. For example, in Surah Al-Asr (103:1-3), Allah says,
By time, indeed, mankind is in loss, except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience.
This verse highlights that true success lies in both belief and righteous actions. Mere verbal profession of faith is insufficient if it is not accompanied by righteous deeds. Similarly, in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:15), Allah says,
Indeed, the believers are only the ones who have believed in Allah and His Messenger and then doubt not but strive with their properties and their lives in the cause of Allah. It is those who are the truthful.
Here, Allah emphasizes that true believers are those who not only believe but also strive with their wealth and lives in the cause of Allah. Their actions demonstrate their sincerity and commitment to their faith. This aligns perfectly with the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), which reminds us that our actions are the true measure of our faith.
The consequences of this Hadith are profound. It reminds us that we cannot simply rely on empty words or claims of faith. We must strive to translate our beliefs into actions that benefit ourselves and others. Our actions should reflect the teachings of Islam and the values of justice, compassion, and righteousness.
For example, if someone claims to be a compassionate person but does not actively engage in acts of kindness and charity, their claim holds little weight. On the other hand, a person who consistently demonstrates compassion through their actions, such as helping the needy, caring for the elderly, and showing empathy towards others, truly embodies the essence of compassion.
This Hadith also serves as a motivation for self-reflection and self-improvement. It encourages us to constantly evaluate our actions and intentions, seeking to align them with the teachings of Islam. It reminds us that our words should be a reflection of our actions, and our actions should be a reflection of our faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) beautifully encapsulates the importance of actions over words. It reminds us that we will be tested and judged based on our deeds and intentions. It urges us to strive for righteousness and sincerity in all aspects of our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the ability to embody this Hadith in our actions and may He guide us to the path of righteousness.
