The knowledge of a hypocrite is [only] on his tongue.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The knowledge of a hypocrite is [only] on his tongue.

This impactful saying highlights the deceptive nature of a hypocrite, who may appear to possess knowledge and speak eloquently, but their knowledge is superficial and lacks sincerity.

Let us delve deeper into the key words of this Hadith. The word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ" refers to the understanding and awareness of a subject matter. It encompasses not only theoretical knowledge but also practical application. The term (hypocrite) "المُنافِقِ" refers to an individual who outwardly claims to be a believer but inwardly conceals disbelief or hypocrisy. Finally, (on his tongue) "في لِسانِهِ" signifies that the knowledge of the hypocrite is limited to mere words and does not penetrate their heart or guide their actions.

To understand the implications of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Munafiqun (63:1),

When the hypocrites come to you, [O Muhammad], they say, 'We testify that you are the Messenger of Allah.' And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.

This verse highlights the deceptive nature of hypocrites, who claim to believe in the Prophet () outwardly, but their hearts are filled with disbelief.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:8-10), Allah describes the hypocrites as those who try to deceive Allah and the believers by pretending to have faith while concealing their true intentions. They speak with eloquence and claim to have knowledge, but their actions contradict their words. Allah says,

And of the people are some who say, 'We believe in Allah and the Last Day,' but they are not believers. They [think to] deceive Allah and those who believe, but they deceive not except themselves and perceive [it] not. In their hearts is disease, so Allah has increased their disease; and for them is a painful punishment because they [habitually] used to lie.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement emphasizes the importance of sincerity and genuine faith. It serves as a reminder to Muslims that true knowledge is not merely confined to words, but it should be reflected in one's actions and intentions. A hypocrite may possess eloquence and speak convincingly, but their knowledge lacks substance and sincerity. Their words may deceive others, but they cannot deceive Allah, who knows the true state of their hearts.

This Hadith also serves as a warning against hypocrisy and insincerity in our own lives. It calls upon Muslims to constantly examine their intentions and ensure that their knowledge is accompanied by righteous actions. It reminds us that true knowledge is transformative, guiding us towards righteousness and benefiting both ourselves and society.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the superficiality of knowledge possessed by hypocrites. It serves as a reminder to Muslims to seek knowledge with sincerity and to ensure that their actions align with their words. By reflecting on the Quranic verses that expose the nature of hypocrites, we are reminded of the importance of genuine faith and the consequences of insincerity. May Allah guide us all to true knowledge and protect us from hypocrisy.
