(Ghurar al-Hikam: Haste And The Hasty)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

كُلُّ مُعاجَل يَسْأَلُ الإنْظارَ۔

This can be translated as,

Everyone who is hastened asks for more time.

Let us delve into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (mu'ajjal) "مُعاجَل" refers to someone who is in a hurry or hastened. It signifies a person who is impatient and seeks immediate results or outcomes. The word (yas'al) "يَسْأَلُ" means to ask or request. And (al-inzar) "الإنْظارَ" refers to more time or delay.

This Hadith highlights the human tendency to rush and seek instant gratification. It reminds us that when we are impatient and rush into things without proper consideration, we often find ourselves in need of more time to rectify our mistakes or fulfill our desires. It serves as a cautionary reminder to Muslims to be patient and deliberate in their actions.

The Quran provides numerous verses that emphasize the importance of patience and the perils of hastiness. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 153:

O you who have believed, seek help through patience and prayer. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse reminds us that patience is a virtue that brings us closer to Allah and grants us His support.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-A'raf, verse 199, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

This verse advises Muslims to be patient and not rush into making decisions or taking actions. It encourages us to seek knowledge and understanding before acting, rather than being influenced by ignorance or impulsive desires.

The consequences of hastiness can be detrimental in various aspects of life. For instance, in personal relationships, rushing into commitments without proper evaluation can lead to broken trust and heartache. In financial matters, impulsive spending or investments can result in financial instability. In matters of faith, hastiness can lead to misguided beliefs and actions that are not in line with the teachings of Islam.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we can see that Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is reminding us to be mindful of our actions and to avoid rushing into decisions without careful consideration. By doing so, we can avoid the need for more time to rectify our mistakes or fulfill our desires.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) was known for his deep knowledge and wisdom. His words carry great weight and serve as a guiding light for Muslims. This Hadith serves as a reminder to Muslims to be patient, deliberate, and thoughtful in their actions, seeking guidance from the Quran and the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad () and his purified progeny.

May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and patience to make sound decisions and to avoid the perils of hastiness. May we always seek His guidance and strive to follow the example of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in our lives.
