رُبَّ ذَنْب مِقْدارُُ العُقُوبَةِ عَلَيْهِ إعْلامُ المُذْنِبِ بِهِ۔
Many a sin is such that the [appropriate] degree of punishment for it is informing the sinner of it.

(Ghurar al-Hikam: Forgiveness And Pardon)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
رُبَّ ذَنْب مِقْدارُُ العُقُوبَةِ عَلَيْهِ إعْلامُ المُذْنِبِ بِهِ۔
This Hadith can be translated as,
Many a sin is such that the [appropriate] degree of punishment for it is informing the sinner of it.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) in light of the Quran. The key words in this Hadith are (sin) "ذَنْب", (degree) "مِقْدارُُ", (punishment) "عُقُوبَةِ", and (informing) "إعْلامُ".
The Quran emphasizes the importance of recognizing and acknowledging our sins. In Surah Al-A'raf (7:23), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
They said, 'Our Lord, we have wronged ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have mercy upon us, we will surely be among the losers.'
This verse highlights the significance of admitting our mistakes and seeking forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). By acknowledging our sins, we demonstrate humility and a desire to rectify our actions.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) further emphasizes the degree of punishment that corresponds to each sin. This degree of punishment is not merely a physical or worldly consequence, but also includes the spiritual and psychological impact that sin has on an individual. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-An'am (6:120),
And leave what is apparent of sin and what is concealed thereof. Indeed, those who earn [blame for] sin will be recompensed for that which they used to commit.
This verse highlights that the consequences of our sins are not limited to the physical realm, but extend to the spiritual realm as well.
The act of informing the sinner of their sin is not meant to shame or humiliate them, but rather to serve as a wake-up call and an opportunity for self-reflection and repentance. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:6), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
O you who have believed, if there comes to you a disobedient one with information, investigate, lest you harm a people out of ignorance and become, over what you have done, regretful.
This verse emphasizes the importance of verifying information before passing judgment, as it prevents harm and regret.
Informing the sinner of their sin can have profound effects on their spiritual growth and development. It can serve as a catalyst for self-improvement and repentance. When a person becomes aware of their wrongdoing, they are more likely to seek forgiveness from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and strive to rectify their actions. This process of self-reflection and repentance is essential for the purification of the soul and the attainment of spiritual growth.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of recognizing our sins and the corresponding degree of punishment they entail. It emphasizes the act of informing the sinner of their sin as a means of awakening their conscience and facilitating their repentance. By acknowledging our mistakes and seeking forgiveness, we can embark on a journey of spiritual growth and purification. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us all on the path of righteousness and grant us the strength to overcome our sins.
