تَمْييزُ الباقي مِنَ الفاني مِنْ أشْرَفِ النَّظَرِ۔
Distinguishing the everlasting from the perishing is from the noblest discernment.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Thinking And The Thinker)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
تَمْييزُ الباقي مِنَ الفاني مِنْ أشْرَفِ النَّظَرِ۔
This can be translated as,
Distinguishing the everlasting from the perishing is from the noblest discernment.
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this enlightening Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) and explore its significance in light of the Quranic teachings.
The word (tamyez) "تَمْييزُ" in the Hadith refers to the act of distinguishing or differentiating. It implies the ability to discern between two things and identify their true nature. In this context, it refers to the ability to differentiate between what is everlasting and what is temporary or perishable.
The word (al-baqi) "الباقي" means the everlasting or the eternal. It refers to that which remains and endures, unaffected by the passage of time or the transient nature of this world. On the other hand, the word (al-fani) "الفاني" means the perishing or the temporary. It refers to that which is fleeting and transient, destined to fade away and cease to exist.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of discerning between these two states. This discernment is not merely a superficial observation but a profound understanding that distinguishes the ultimate reality from the illusory nature of this world. It is a reflection of deep insight and wisdom.
To comprehend the significance of this discernment, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Qasas, verse 60:
(Quran 28:60)
And whatever you have been given is an enjoyment of the worldly life and its adornment, and that which is with Allah is better and more lasting. So will you not use reason?
This verse emphasizes the temporary nature of worldly possessions and pleasures, urging us to reflect on the eternal rewards that await us in the Hereafter. It reminds us that true success lies in distinguishing between the fleeting attractions of this world and the everlasting treasures in the sight of Allah.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hadid, verse 20, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
(Quran 57:20)
Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval. And what is the worldly life except the enjoyment of delusion.
This verse emphasizes the fleeting nature of worldly pursuits and highlights the deceptive allure of material possessions. It urges us to focus on the eternal rewards of the Hereafter and to discern between the temporary pleasures of this world and the everlasting bliss in the presence of Allah.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for us as Muslims to develop a deep understanding of the transitory nature of this world and to prioritize the pursuit of the everlasting. By distinguishing between the temporary and the eternal, we can make informed choices and align our actions with the ultimate purpose of our existence.
This discernment has profound consequences for our lives. It enables us to prioritize our efforts and investments in that which will bring us lasting benefit. It helps us navigate the challenges and trials of this world with patience and resilience, knowing that the true reward lies in the Hereafter. It also safeguards us from being consumed by the materialistic pursuits of this world, allowing us to maintain a balanced perspective and focus on the higher purpose of our creation.
In conclusion, Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith reminds us of the importance of discerning between the everlasting and the perishing. By developing this noble discernment, we can align our actions with the teachings of the Quran and strive for the eternal rewards promised by Allah. May Allah grant us the wisdom and insight to distinguish between the transient and the everlasting, and may He guide us to make choices that lead to eternal success.
