اَلْعِلْمُ نِعْمَ دَليلٌ۔
Knowledge is indeed a good guide.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Knowledge)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "العِلْمُ نِعْمَ دَليلٌ۔" This translates to,
Knowledge is indeed a good guide.
Let us delve into the connotation of this statement in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us reflect upon the word (knowledge) "عِلْمُ". Knowledge is the acquisition of information, understanding, and awareness. It encompasses both religious and worldly knowledge. In the context of this Hadith, it refers to the knowledge that leads one towards righteousness and guidance.
Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of seeking knowledge in numerous verses of the Quran. In Surah Al-Zumar, Allah says, (Quran 39:9)
Say, 'Are those who know equal to those who do not know?' Only they will remember [who are] people of understanding.
This verse highlights the superiority of those who possess knowledge over those who are ignorant.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) commands the Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) to pray, (Quran 20:114)
My Lord, increase me in knowledge.
This verse emphasizes the importance of continuously seeking knowledge and the recognition that knowledge is a gift from Allah.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then describes knowledge as "نِعْمَ دَليلٌ۔" The word (good) "نِعْمَ" signifies the excellence and virtue of knowledge. It implies that knowledge is a source of guidance and a means to attain righteousness. It is a blessing from Allah that illuminates the path of those who seek it sincerely.
The Quran affirms the role of knowledge as a guide in various verses. In Surah Al-Ankabut, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states, (Quran 13:11)
Indeed, Allah will not change the condition of a people until they change what is in themselves. And when Allah intends for a people ill, there is no repelling it. And there is not for them besides Him any patron. And it is not for them to be helped. And when Allah intends for a people good, there is no repelling it. And there can be no changing His words. And if Allah should touch you with adversity, there is no remover of it except Him. And if He touches you with good - then He is over all things competent in power -
This verse highlights that Allah's guidance and blessings are bestowed upon those who seek knowledge and strive to improve themselves. Knowledge empowers individuals to make positive changes in their lives and society. It serves as a guiding light, leading them towards righteousness and success.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of knowledge as a guide. Knowledge equips individuals with the tools to make informed decisions, distinguish between right and wrong, and navigate the complexities of life. It enables them to understand the teachings of Islam, comprehend the purpose of their existence, and fulfill their responsibilities as Muslims.
Moreover, knowledge empowers individuals to combat ignorance, falsehood, and injustice. It enables them to challenge oppressive systems, promote social justice, and contribute positively to their communities. Through knowledge, individuals can bring about positive change and establish a just and equitable society.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize the acquisition of knowledge. It encourages us to seek knowledge from authentic sources, engage in critical thinking, and apply that knowledge in our daily lives. By doing so, we can become beacons of guidance and contribute to the betterment of society.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the immense value and importance of knowledge. It is a divine gift that serves as a guide, leading us towards righteousness and success. By seeking knowledge and applying it in our lives, we can fulfill our responsibilities as Muslims and contribute to the betterment of society. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and understanding to seek knowledge and benefit from it.
