قَدْ جَهِلَ مَنِ اسْتَنْصَحَ أعْدائَهُ۔
He who seeks advice from his enemies is indeed ignorant.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Sincere Advice)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, the Ahl al-Bayt, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
He who seeks advice from his enemies is indeed ignorant.
This beautiful saying highlights the importance of seeking advice from those who have our best interests at heart and possess wisdom and knowledge. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The key word in this Hadith is (istansaha) "استَنصَحَ", which means to seek advice or counsel. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is emphasizing the significance of seeking advice, as it is a means to gain guidance and make informed decisions. However, he specifically warns against seeking advice from one's enemies, as they are not sincere in their intentions and may mislead or deceive us.
To understand the wisdom behind this statement, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. In Surah Al-Imran, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 3:118)
O you who have believed, do not take as intimates those other than yourselves, for they will not spare you [any] ruin. They wish you would have hardship. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have certainly made clear to you the signs, if you will use reason.
This verse highlights the importance of choosing our companions wisely and not seeking advice from those who harbor ill intentions towards us. Our enemies may disguise their true intentions and provide advice that is detrimental to our well-being. Therefore, it is crucial to seek counsel from those who genuinely care for us and have our best interests at heart.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious and discerning when seeking advice. It is essential to seek guidance from individuals who possess knowledge, wisdom, and sincerity. This aligns with the Quranic teachings, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) encourages believers to seek knowledge and consult those who are knowledgeable.
In Surah Al-Nahl, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says, (Quran 16:89)
And We revealed to you the Book as clarification for all things and as guidance and mercy and good tidings for the Muslims.
This verse emphasizes the Quran as a comprehensive source of guidance for Muslims. It encourages us to seek knowledge and understanding from the Quran, as it provides clarity and guidance in all aspects of life.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement also highlights the importance of knowledge and wisdom. He, himself, was known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, and his advice and teachings are highly regarded by Muslims. Seeking advice from knowledgeable individuals who possess wisdom and understanding is crucial for making informed decisions and avoiding potential pitfalls.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder for Muslims to be cautious when seeking advice. It emphasizes the importance of seeking counsel from those who have our best interests at heart and possess knowledge and wisdom. By doing so, we can make informed decisions and avoid being misled by those who may harbor ill intentions towards us. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to seek advice from the right sources and guide us on the path of righteousness.
