Equity removes differences and brings about harmony.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Equity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

الإنصافُ يَرْفَعُ الخِلافَ ويُوجِبُ الاِيتلافَ

which translates to

Equity removes differences and brings about harmony.

This beautiful saying of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the importance of justice and fairness in resolving conflicts and fostering unity among people.

Let us delve into the meaning of the key words in this Hadith. (al-insaf) "الإنصافُ" refers to equity or justice, which involves treating others with fairness and impartiality. It is the act of giving each person their due rights and ensuring that no one is wronged or oppressed. (al-khilaf) "الخِلافَ" refers to differences or disputes that arise between individuals or groups. These differences can be in opinions, beliefs, or actions. (al-itlaf) "الاِيتلافَ" means harmony or reconciliation, which is the state of resolving conflicts and establishing peace and unity.

To understand the significance of equity in removing differences and bringing about harmony, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of justice in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9), Allah says,

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make peace between them with justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the role of justice in resolving conflicts and promoting unity among believers.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah commands,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice even if it goes against our personal interests or biases.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement further highlights the consequences of practicing equity. When justice is upheld and people are treated fairly, it leads to the removal of differences and the establishment of harmony. This is because justice creates an environment of trust, respect, and mutual understanding. When individuals feel that their rights are protected and their grievances are addressed, they are more likely to come together and work towards common goals.

For example, in a society where justice prevails, people from different backgrounds and beliefs can coexist peacefully. Their differences are acknowledged and respected, and conflicts are resolved through fair and unbiased means. This fosters a sense of unity and cooperation, as everyone feels valued and included in the society.

On the other hand, when justice is absent, differences escalate into disputes and divisions. Injustice breeds resentment, animosity, and a sense of injustice, leading to further conflicts and discord. This can be seen in societies where certain groups are marginalized, oppressed, or denied their rights. In such situations, harmony becomes elusive, and the fabric of society is torn apart.

Reflecting on Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement, we are reminded of the importance of justice in our personal lives, relationships, and communities. By practicing equity and treating others with fairness, we can contribute to the removal of differences and the establishment of harmony. As Muslims, it is our duty to uphold justice and work towards creating a just and harmonious society, guided by the principles of the Quran and the teachings of the Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ). May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to embody justice in all aspects of our lives.
