(Ghurar al-Hikam: Gratitude And The Grateful)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

ثَمَرَةُ الشُّكْرِ زيادَةُ النِّعَمِ۔

This can be translated as,

The fruit of gratitude is increase in blessings.

This concise statement by Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) holds profound wisdom and guidance for all Muslims.

Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith. The word (thamaratu) "ثَمَرَةُ" refers to the fruit or result of something. It signifies the outcome or consequence of an action. In this context, it represents the outcome of expressing gratitude. The word (ash-shukr) "الشُّكْرِ" means gratitude or thankfulness. It is the act of acknowledging and appreciating the blessings bestowed upon us by Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ).

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) then states that the result of gratitude is (ziyadatu an-ni'am) "زيادَةُ النِّعَمِ", which means an increase in blessings. When we express gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for the blessings He has bestowed upon us, He increases those blessings and bestows upon us even more. This increase can manifest in various forms, such as increased provisions, improved well-being, and enhanced spiritual growth.

This concept of gratitude leading to an increase in blessings is beautifully emphasized in the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Ibrahim (14:7),

And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]; but if you deny, indeed, My punishment is severe.'

This verse clearly highlights the correlation between gratitude and an increase in blessings. When we express gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), He promises to increase us in His favor.

Furthermore, in Surah Ibrahim (14:34), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

And He gave you from all you asked of Him. And if you should count the favor of Allah, you could not enumerate them. Indeed, mankind is [generally] most unjust and ungrateful.

This verse highlights the abundance of blessings that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) bestows upon us, even though we may not fully realize or appreciate them. It serves as a reminder for us to be grateful for the countless blessings we have been granted.

Reflecting on the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), we can understand the importance of expressing gratitude in our daily lives. Gratitude is not only a verbal expression but also a state of the heart. When we sincerely thank Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) for His blessings, we acknowledge His infinite mercy and kindness towards us. This act of gratitude not only brings us closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) but also opens the doors for further blessings and favors from Him.

Moreover, gratitude is a transformative quality that shapes our character and strengthens our faith. When we recognize and appreciate the blessings in our lives, we develop a positive outlook and contentment. This, in turn, leads to inner peace and tranquility. Gratitude also serves as a protection against arrogance and entitlement, as it reminds us that all blessings come from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) and should be acknowledged with humility.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that expressing gratitude to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the key to increasing His blessings upon us. By acknowledging and appreciating the countless blessings we have been granted, we open ourselves up to even more blessings. Gratitude is not only a means of receiving more from Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but it also transforms our hearts, strengthens our faith, and brings us closer to our Creator. May we always strive to cultivate an attitude of gratitude in our lives as Muslims.
