اَلسَّهَرُ رَوْضَةُ الْمُشْتاقينَ۔
Night vigil is the garden of those who yearn [nearness of Allah].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Night Vigil)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds, and blessings and peace be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure Ahl al-Bayt (عَلَيْهِمُ ٱلسَّلَامُ), and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "السَّهَرُ رَوْضَةُ الْمُشْتاقينَ۔" This can be translated as,
Night vigil is the garden of those who yearn [nearness of Allah].
Let us delve into the essence of this Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (sahar) "سَهَر" refers to staying awake during the night, particularly for the purpose of worship and seeking closeness to Allah. It is an act of devotion that requires sacrifice and dedication. The word (rawdah) "روضة" means a garden or a place of beauty and tranquility. It symbolizes a serene and peaceful environment that brings solace to the heart. And finally, (al-mushtaqeen) "الْمُشْتَاقِينَ" refers to those who yearn and long for the nearness of Allah, who have a deep desire to connect with their Creator.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of night vigil and the spiritual benefits it brings. In Surah Al-Muzzammil (73:2-4), Allah says,
Stand [in prayer] at night, except for a little - Half of it - or subtract from it a little. Or add to it, and recite the Qur'an with measured recitation.
This verse encourages Muslims to engage in the night prayer, even if it is for a short duration. It highlights the significance of dedicating a portion of the night for worship and recitation of the Quran.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:79), Allah says,
And during a part of the night, pray Tahajjud beyond what is incumbent on you; perhaps your Lord will raise you to a praised station.
This verse emphasizes the merit of performing the Tahajjud prayer, which is a form of night vigil. It indicates that through this act of devotion, one may attain a lofty position in the sight of Allah.
Now, let us reflect on the significance of Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) hadith. The night vigil, as mentioned by Imam Ali, is likened to a garden. Just as a garden is a place of beauty, tranquility, and growth, the act of staying awake during the night for worship is a means to cultivate one's spiritual growth and find solace in the presence of Allah.
When we engage in night vigil, we detach ourselves from the distractions of the world and create a serene environment for reflection, supplication, and recitation of the Quran. It is during these peaceful moments that our hearts become more receptive to the divine guidance and our connection with Allah deepens. The night vigil becomes a source of nourishment for our souls, just as a garden provides nourishment for plants and flowers.
Moreover, the hadith highlights the significance of yearning for the nearness of Allah. It is the sincere longing and desire to be close to our Creator that motivates us to engage in night vigil. This yearning is a reflection of our love for Allah and our recognition of His infinite mercy and blessings. It is this yearning that propels us to sacrifice our sleep and dedicate our nights to seeking His pleasure.
The consequences of practicing night vigil are manifold. Firstly, it strengthens our relationship with Allah and deepens our spirituality. It allows us to experience the tranquility and peace that comes from being in the presence of the Divine. Secondly, it purifies our hearts and helps us overcome the distractions and temptations of this world. By detaching ourselves from worldly affairs and focusing on our worship, we become more conscious of our actions and strive to improve ourselves.
Additionally, night vigil instills discipline and self-control within us. It requires commitment and perseverance to wake up during the night and engage in worship. This discipline spills over into other aspects of our lives, helping us become more organized and focused in our daily activities.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the importance of night vigil as a means to cultivate our spiritual growth and seek closeness to Allah. It encourages us to create a serene environment for reflection, supplication, and recitation of the Quran. By yearning for the nearness of Allah, we embark on a journey of self-discovery and spiritual enlightenment. May Allah grant us the ability to engage in night vigil and reap its countless benefits.
