إنَّكُمْ هَدَفُ النَّوائِبِ، ودَريئَةُ الأسْقامِ۔
Indeed you are the target of calamities and the object of sicknesses.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Hardships)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:
إنَّكُمْ هَدَفُ النَّوائِبِ، ودَريئَةُ الأسْقامِ۔
This beautiful Hadith can be translated as:
Indeed you are the target of calamities and the object of sicknesses.
Let us delve into the meanings of the important words in this Hadith to gain a deeper understanding. The word (hadafu) "هَدَفُ" means "target" or "aim," indicating that calamities and hardships are directed towards the believers. The word (nawa'ib) "نَّوائِبِ" refers to "calamities" or "afflictions," which are trials and tribulations that befall individuals or communities. The word (dari'atu) "دَريئَةُ" means "object" or "focus," highlighting that the believers become the focus of sicknesses. And finally, the word (asqam) "أسْقامِ" refers to "sicknesses" or "ailments," which can manifest physically, mentally, or spiritually.
To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran, which provides guidance and insights into the trials and tribulations faced by the believers. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:155):
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient.
This verse emphasizes that trials and hardships are an inevitable part of life, and the believers are tested with various difficulties.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ankabut (29:2), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states:
Do the people think that they will be left to say, 'We believe' and they will not be tried?
This verse reminds us that belief alone is not sufficient; rather, it is through trials and tribulations that our faith is tested and strengthened.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the reality that believers are the target of calamities and the object of sicknesses. It serves as a reminder that hardships are a part of our journey in this world, and they serve a purpose in our spiritual growth and development. Just as a target is aimed at to test its strength and resilience, the believers are tested through various trials to strengthen their faith and character.
When we face calamities and sicknesses, it is essential to remember that these challenges are not random or meaningless. They are opportunities for us to demonstrate patience, perseverance, and reliance on Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Through these difficulties, we have the chance to draw closer to Allah, seek His guidance, and develop a deeper understanding of our own weaknesses and limitations.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, reminds us of the purpose behind these trials. He encourages us to embrace the challenges we face and view them as opportunities for growth and spiritual elevation. By doing so, we can transform our hardships into blessings and emerge stronger and more resilient in our faith.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a powerful reminder for Muslims that they are the target of calamities and the object of sicknesses. Through the trials and tribulations we face, we have the opportunity to strengthen our faith, develop patience, and draw closer to Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ). Let us embrace these challenges with gratitude, knowing that they are a means of purification and spiritual growth. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and wisdom to navigate through the difficulties of life and emerge as better believers.
