The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who is dutiful with Allah, the Glorified, does not spoil [his relationship] with anyone.
This Hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining a good relationship with Allah and with others. Let us delve into the deeper meanings of this thought-provoking Hadith in light of the Quran.
The word (sulha) "صَلُحَ" in this Hadith refers to being dutiful, righteous, and upright in one's actions and behavior. It implies fulfilling one's obligations towards Allah and His creation. This includes performing acts of worship, following the teachings of Islam, and treating others with kindness, justice, and respect. The word (ma'a) "مَعَ" means "with" or
in the presence of.
Therefore, the Hadith is highlighting the importance of maintaining a good relationship with Allah and not spoiling it in the presence of anyone.
Allah, in the Quran, encourages us to be dutiful to Him and to maintain good relationships with others. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (Quran 2:43)
And establish prayer and give zakah and bow with those who bow [in worship and obedience].
This verse emphasizes the importance of fulfilling our obligations towards Allah and joining others in acts of worship. It also implies the significance of maintaining unity and harmony within the Muslim community.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Ma'idah, Allah commands us, (Quran 5:8)
O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm for Allah, witnesses in justice, and do not let the hatred of a people prevent you from being just. Be just; that is nearer to righteousness. And fear Allah; indeed, Allah is Acquainted with what you do.
This verse highlights the importance of justice and fairness in our interactions with others, regardless of their beliefs or backgrounds. It reminds us not to let personal biases or animosity hinder our ability to be just and righteous.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that our relationship with Allah is intertwined with our relationships with others. When we are dutiful to Allah, it reflects in our behavior towards others. If we are sincere in our worship, it will manifest in our interactions, and we will strive to treat others with kindness, respect, and justice.
Maintaining a good relationship with Allah and others has numerous motivations and consequences. Firstly, it is a means of attaining closeness to Allah and seeking His pleasure. When we fulfill our obligations towards Him and treat His creation with kindness, we are demonstrating our love and devotion to Him. Allah, in return, showers His blessings upon us and grants us His mercy.
Secondly, maintaining good relationships with others fosters unity and harmony within the Muslim community. It strengthens the bonds of brotherhood and sisterhood, creating an environment of love, compassion, and support. It also serves as a means of inviting others to Islam through our exemplary conduct.
Conversely, spoiling our relationship with others can have detrimental consequences. It can lead to discord, animosity, and division within the community. It tarnishes our reputation as Muslims and hinders our ability to convey the message of Islam effectively. Moreover, it can distance us from the mercy and forgiveness of Allah, as He dislikes those who cause strife and harm to others.
Reflecting on this Hadith, we should strive to be dutiful to Allah and maintain good relationships with others. We should fulfill our obligations towards Allah, perform acts of worship sincerely, and treat others with kindness, justice, and respect. By doing so, we not only strengthen our relationship with Allah but also contribute to the unity and well-being of the Muslim community.
May Allah, the Glorified and Exalted, grant us the ability to be dutiful to Him and maintain good relationships with others. May He bless us with His mercy and forgiveness and guide us on the path of righteousness. Ameen.
