Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states:

مَنْ صَحَّ يَقينُهُ زَهِدَ فِي المِراءِ۔

This can be translated as:

One whose certitude is sound abstains from dispute.

Let us delve into the meaning of the important words in this Hadith. The word (sahha) "صَحَّ" means to be sound, strong, or firm. It refers to the state of having a strong and unwavering conviction. (yaqinuhu) "يَقينُهُ" means certitude or absolute certainty. It signifies a deep-rooted belief that is not shaken by doubts or uncertainties. (zahida) "زَهِدَ" means to abstain or to refrain from something. And finally, (al-mira) "المِراءِ" refers to disputes or arguments.

To understand the profound wisdom behind this Hadith, we can turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9):

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the importance of resolving disputes and conflicts among believers. It emphasizes the need for justice and reconciliation. Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith further expands on this concept by emphasizing the role of certitude in abstaining from disputes.

When a person's certitude is sound and strong, they are not easily swayed by arguments or disagreements. They possess a deep-rooted understanding of the truth and are less likely to engage in unnecessary disputes. This is because their unwavering conviction allows them to prioritize unity, peace, and justice over personal ego or the desire to prove oneself right.

The Quran also advises Muslims to avoid unnecessary arguments and disputes. In Surah Al-Anfal (8:46), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:

And obey Allah and His Messenger, and do not dispute and [thus] lose courage and [then] your strength would depart; and be patient. Indeed, Allah is with the patient.

This verse reminds us that engaging in constant disputes weakens our resolve and diminishes our strength as a community. It encourages us to focus on obeying Allah and His Messenger, rather than wasting our energy in fruitless arguments. By abstaining from disputes, we preserve our unity and maintain the strength and resilience needed to face challenges as a united ummah.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) Hadith serves as a reminder for Muslims to prioritize unity and harmony over unnecessary conflicts. It teaches us that true strength lies in having a firm conviction and abstaining from disputes that can lead to division and discord within the ummah.

When we abstain from disputes, we create an environment of peace and tranquility. We foster a sense of brotherhood and sisterhood among Muslims, where differences are respected and conflicts are resolved through dialogue and understanding. This not only strengthens our individual faith but also contributes to the overall well-being of the Muslim community.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) reminds us of the importance of having a sound and strong certitude. It urges us to abstain from disputes and arguments that can lead to division and discord. By prioritizing unity, peace, and justice, we uphold the teachings of the Quran and the example set by our beloved Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to follow this guidance and strengthen our bonds as Muslims.
