آفَةُ السَّخاءِ المَنُّ۔
The bane of generosity is obligation.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: To Put [Others] Under Obligation)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
The bane of generosity is obligation.
Let us delve into the meaning of this wise utterance and explore its significance in light of the Quran.
The word (bane) "آفَةُ" refers to something harmful or detrimental. It implies a negative consequence or outcome. The term (generosity) "السَّخاءِ" refers to the act of giving freely and abundantly, without expecting anything in return. It encompasses acts of kindness, charity, and selflessness.
The word (obligation) "المَنُّ" signifies a sense of duty or compulsion. It refers to situations where one feels compelled to give, either due to societal expectations, pressure, or a sense of indebtedness.
Now, let us turn to the Quran to gain a deeper understanding of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:261):
The example of those who spend their wealth in the way of Allah is like a seed [of grain] which grows seven spikes; in each spike is a hundred grains. And Allah multiplies [His reward] for whom He wills. And Allah is all-Encompassing and Knowing.
This verse highlights the immense rewards and blessings that come with voluntary acts of generosity. When we give freely and willingly, without any sense of obligation, Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) multiplies our rewards manifold. This act of selfless giving not only benefits the recipient but also purifies our souls and strengthens our relationship with Allah.
On the other hand, when we give out of obligation or compulsion, our intentions may become tainted. Our focus shifts from seeking the pleasure of Allah to fulfilling societal expectations or relieving a sense of guilt. This can lead to a decrease in the sincerity and purity of our actions.
In Surah Al-Baqarah (2:272), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says:
Not upon you, [O Muhammad], is [responsibility for] their guidance, but Allah guides whom He wills. And whatever good you [believers] spend is for yourselves, and you do not spend except seeking the countenance of Allah. And whatever you spend of good - it will be fully repaid to you, and you will not be wronged.
This verse emphasizes that our acts of generosity should be solely for the sake of Allah, seeking His pleasure and His countenance. When we give without any sense of obligation, solely to please Allah, He promises to fully repay us and ensure that we are not wronged in any way.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement reminds us of the importance of maintaining the purity and sincerity of our acts of generosity. When we give out of obligation, we risk diluting the spiritual essence of our actions. True generosity stems from a genuine desire to help others and please Allah, rather than fulfilling societal expectations or relieving a sense of guilt.
Furthermore, this Hadith serves as a reminder that our intentions and motivations play a crucial role in the acceptability and effectiveness of our deeds. It encourages us to reflect on our actions and ensure that they are driven by pure intentions and a genuine desire to please Allah.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that the bane of generosity is obligation. It highlights the importance of giving freely and willingly, without any sense of compulsion or obligation. By doing so, we can ensure the purity and sincerity of our actions, and seek the pleasure of Allah. May Allah guide us to be truly generous and selfless in our deeds, and may He accept our efforts.
