أوَّلُ عِوَضِ الحَلِيمِ عَنْ حِلْمِهِ أنَّ النّاسَ كُلَّهُمْ أنْصارُهُ عَلى خَصْمِهِ۔
The first compensation for the forbearing person from his forbearance is that all the people are [ready to be] his helpers against his enemy.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Forebearing)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. All praise is due to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtue of forbearance and its reward. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his immense knowledge and wisdom, teaches us that the first compensation for a person who possesses forbearance is that all people will come to his aid and support against his enemy.
Let us delve deeper into the words of this Hadith to gain a better understanding. The word (compensation) "عِوَضِ" refers to the reward or recompense that one receives for their actions. In this context, it signifies the reward that a person of forbearance will receive. The word (forbearing) "حَلِيمِ" describes a person who possesses the quality of patience, tolerance, and self-control in the face of difficulties or provocations. This person remains calm and composed, refraining from reacting impulsively or aggressively.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states that the first reward for a person's forbearance is that all people become his helpers against his enemy. This means that when a person exhibits forbearance, others are inclined to support and assist them in times of conflict or adversity. This support can manifest in various ways, such as offering advice, standing up for their rights, or even physically defending them against their enemies.
To further understand the significance of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) emphasizes the importance of forbearance and its rewards in several verses. In Surah Al-Imran (3:134), Allah says,
Who spend [in the cause of Allah] during ease and hardship and who restrain anger and who pardon the people - and Allah loves the doers of good.
This verse highlights the virtue of restraining anger and pardoning others, which aligns with the concept of forbearance mentioned in the Hadith.
Additionally, in Surah Ash-Shura (42:40), Allah says,
The recompense for an evil is an evil like thereof; but whoever forgives and makes reconciliation, his reward is with Allah. Verily, He likes not the Zalimun (oppressors, polytheists, and wrongdoers).
This verse emphasizes the importance of forgiveness and reconciliation, which are closely related to forbearance. It further emphasizes that the reward for such actions lies with Allah, indicating that the ultimate reward for forbearance is with Him.
Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that when a person possesses forbearance, they create an environment of support and assistance from others. This is because forbearance is a quality that is highly regarded and respected by people. When individuals witness someone remaining calm and composed in the face of adversity, they are naturally drawn to support and stand by that person. This support can be seen in various aspects of life, such as personal relationships, social interactions, and even in matters of justice and fairness.
Furthermore, the reward of having people as helpers against one's enemy goes beyond mere physical assistance. It also includes the psychological and emotional support that comes from knowing that others are standing with you. This support can provide strength, encouragement, and a sense of security. It can motivate individuals to persevere in the face of challenges and maintain their forbearance even in the most difficult situations.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) highlights the virtue of forbearance and its reward. By remaining patient, tolerant, and composed, a person creates an environment where others are inclined to support and assist them against their enemies. This support can manifest in various ways and provides not only physical assistance but also emotional and psychological strength. May we all strive to cultivate the quality of forbearance in our lives and experience the blessings and rewards that come with it.
