مَنْ لَمْ يَصْدُق مِنَ اللّهِ خَوْفُهُ لَمْ يَنَلْ مِنْهُ الأمانُ۔
One who does not truly fear Allah will not gain His security.
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Fear)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The provided Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,
One who does not truly fear Allah will not gain His security.
Let us delve into the meaning of this beautiful Hadith and explore its implications in light of the Quran.
Firstly, let us examine the key words in this Hadith. The word (sadaq) "صدق" means to truly fear or have sincere reverence for Allah. It goes beyond mere lip service and encompasses a deep sense of awe, respect, and consciousness of His presence. The word (aman) "أمان" refers to security, tranquility, and protection that Allah bestows upon those who sincerely fear Him.
The Quran emphasizes the importance of fearing Allah in numerous verses. In Surah Al-Baqarah, Allah says, (2:197)
And take provisions, but indeed, the best provision is Taqwa (fear of Allah). So fear Me, O you of understanding.
This verse highlights that true provision and security come from fearing Allah, as it leads to righteousness and protection from harm.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Hujurat, Allah states, (49:13)
Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.
This verse highlights that true nobility and honor in the sight of Allah is attained through righteousness, which is rooted in sincere fear of Him.
The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that without genuine fear of Allah, one cannot attain true security and peace. When a person truly fears Allah, they are motivated to adhere to His commands and stay away from His prohibitions. This fear acts as a driving force for them to strive for righteousness and avoid sinful actions.
For example, a person who truly fears Allah will refrain from engaging in dishonest business practices, as they are aware that Allah is watching their every action. They will also strive to fulfill their obligations towards others, such as paying their debts and treating people with kindness and justice. This fear of Allah's displeasure motivates them to be honest, just, and compassionate in their dealings.
Conversely, a person who lacks genuine fear of Allah may engage in dishonesty, oppression, and injustice, as they do not feel accountable for their actions. They may prioritize their own desires and interests over the rights of others, leading to a breakdown of trust and harmony in society.
Moreover, the consequences of not truly fearing Allah are not limited to this world. In the Hereafter, those who did not fear Allah and neglected their duties towards Him will face severe consequences. Allah says in Surah Al-Hajj, (20:124)
And whoever turns away from My remembrance - indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.
This verse highlights that those who turn away from the remembrance of Allah will lead a life of misery and will be deprived of guidance on the Day of Resurrection.
Reflecting on this Hadith, Muslims are reminded of the importance of cultivating a sincere fear of Allah in their hearts. It serves as a safeguard against wrongdoing, motivates us to strive for righteousness, and ultimately leads to true security and peace in this world and the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of truly fearing Allah. It serves as a reminder that without genuine fear of Allah, one cannot attain His security. By sincerely fearing Allah, Muslims are motivated to adhere to His commands, avoid sinful actions, and strive for righteousness. May Allah grant us the ability to develop a deep and sincere fear of Him, and may He bestow His security upon us.
