Hadith #5795

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. Peace and blessings be upon Muhammad, his family, his companions, and the righteous successors.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

رُبَّ صَلَف أوْرَثَ تَلَفاً۔

This can be translated as,

Many a [show of ostentation and] vainglory brings about loss.

The word (salaf) "صَلَف" in this Hadith refers to ostentation or showing off. It is when a person performs an act of worship or a good deed with the intention of seeking recognition or praise from others, rather than solely for the sake of Allah. The word (talafan) "تَلَفاً" in the Hadith means loss or destruction. It signifies the negative consequences that arise from engaging in acts of ostentation. Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) is highlighting that the pursuit of recognition and praise from others ultimately leads to spiritual and moral decay, resulting in the loss of one's true purpose in worshiping Allah.

So woe to those who pray [only] to be seen, who delay their prayer and prevent the assistance [to the needy].

Moreover, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a reminder that true success lies in the acceptance and pleasure of Allah, not in the admiration of others. When a person performs acts of worship with sincerity and humility, seeking only the reward from Allah, they attain spiritual growth and closeness to their Creator. Their actions become a means of purifying their souls and elevating their status in the sight of Allah.
