Equity is the best of traits.

— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Equity)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. May peace and blessings be upon the Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "الإنصاف أفضل الشيم" which translates to

Equity is the best of traits.

This beautiful saying emphasizes the importance of fairness and justice in our actions and interactions with others.

The word (inṣāf) "إنصاف" refers to equity, fairness, and justice. It encompasses the concept of treating others with equality and impartiality, ensuring that everyone is given their due rights and that no one is oppressed or wronged. It is a quality that reflects the essence of Islam, as Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) Himself is Just and commands us to be just in our dealings.

The significance of equity and justice is emphasized in numerous verses of the Quran. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:9),

And if two factions among the believers should fight, then make settlement between the two. But if one of them oppresses the other, then fight against the one that oppresses until it returns to the ordinance of Allah. And if it returns, then make settlement between them in justice and act justly. Indeed, Allah loves those who act justly.

This verse highlights the importance of resolving conflicts and disputes with justice and fairness. It encourages Muslims to strive for reconciliation and to establish justice as the foundation of their interactions. By doing so, we not only fulfill the command of Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ), but we also earn His love and pleasure.

Furthermore, in Surah An-Nisa (4:135), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) states,

O you who have believed, be persistently standing firm in justice, witnesses for Allah, even if it be against yourselves or parents and relatives. Whether one is rich or poor, Allah is more worthy of both. So follow not [personal] inclination, lest you not be just. And if you distort [your testimony] or refuse [to give it], then indeed Allah is ever, with what you do, Acquainted.

This verse emphasizes the importance of upholding justice even in difficult circumstances, where personal biases or relationships may tempt us to deviate from fairness. It reminds us that justice should prevail over personal interests and that Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) is the ultimate authority to whom we are accountable.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement,

Equity is the best of traits,

serves as a reminder for Muslims to embody justice in all aspects of their lives. It encourages us to be fair and just in our dealings with others, whether it be in matters of governance, business, family, or personal relationships.

By practicing equity, we create an environment of trust, harmony, and social cohesion. It fosters a sense of unity and brotherhood among Muslims, as everyone is treated with fairness and respect. Equity also serves as a means of preventing oppression and injustice, ensuring that the rights of individuals are protected and upheld.

Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ), known for his profound knowledge and wisdom, highlights the importance of equity as the best of traits. His words serve as a timeless reminder for Muslims to strive for justice and fairness in all aspects of their lives, following the example set by the Prophet Muhammad () and his noble companions.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) emphasizes the significance of equity and justice as fundamental traits for Muslims. It calls upon us to treat others with fairness, uphold their rights, and establish justice in all our interactions. By embodying this trait, we not only fulfill the teachings of Islam but also contribute to the betterment of society as a whole. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) guide us in practicing equity and justice, and may He grant us success in this world and the Hereafter.
