The soul of a believer is firmer than a hard rock while he is [himself]...

(Ghurar al-Hikam: The Believer)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

المؤمن نفسه أصلب من الصلد، وهو أذل من العبد.

This Hadith highlights two contrasting qualities of a believer. Firstly, it states that the soul of a believer is firmer than a hard rock, indicating the strength and resilience of a believer's faith. Secondly, it mentions that despite this firmness, the believer remains humbler than a slave, emphasizing the humility and modesty that should be inherent in a believer's character.

To understand the deeper meaning of this Hadith, let us turn to the Quran for guidance. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:13),

O mankind, indeed We have created you from male and female and made you peoples and tribes that you may know one another. Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you. Indeed, Allah is Knowing and Acquainted.

This verse reminds us that true nobility lies not in wealth, status, or lineage, but in righteousness and piety. A believer's soul, as mentioned in the Hadith, is firmer than a hard rock because it is rooted in faith and righteousness. It is this firmness that enables a believer to withstand the trials and tribulations of life, just as a rock stands strong against external forces. The believer's unwavering faith in Allah and adherence to His commands provide them with the strength to face challenges with patience and resilience.

Furthermore, the Hadith highlights the importance of humility in the life of a believer. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Hujurat (49:11),

O you who have believed, let not a people ridicule [another] people; perhaps they may be better than them; nor let women ridicule [other] women; perhaps they may be better than them. And do not insult one another and do not call each other by [offensive] nicknames. Wretched is the name of disobedience after [one's] faith. And whoever does not repent - then it is those who are the wrongdoers.

This verse teaches us the importance of treating others with respect and avoiding arrogance. A believer, despite their firmness in faith, should always remain humble and recognize their own weaknesses and shortcomings. This humility is exemplified by the comparison to a slave, who is known for their humility and obedience. By embodying humility, a believer acknowledges their dependence on Allah and recognizes that all blessings and successes come from Him alone.

The consequences of embodying the qualities mentioned in this Hadith are profound. A believer who possesses a firm soul and humble character becomes a source of inspiration and guidance for others. Their strength in faith serves as a beacon of hope, encouraging others to remain steadfast in the face of challenges. Their humility allows them to connect with people from all walks of life, fostering unity and harmony within the Muslim community.

Reflecting on this Hadith, we are reminded of the importance of balancing strength and humility in our own lives. We should strive to strengthen our faith, seeking knowledge and understanding of Islam, and developing a strong connection with Allah. Simultaneously, we should cultivate humility, recognizing our own limitations and treating others with kindness and respect.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) teaches us that a believer's soul is firm like a rock, yet they remain humble like a slave. This Hadith emphasizes the importance of maintaining strength in faith while embodying humility in our character. By doing so, we can become true examples of righteousness and inspire others to follow the path of Islam. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the strength and humility to be true believers.
