كَما تُقَدِّمُ تَجِدُ۔
As you send forth, so you shall find [waiting for you in the Hereafter].
— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Provision)
In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.
The Arabic Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states, "كَمَا تُقَدِّمُ تَجِدُ۔" This can be translated into English as,
As you send forth, so you shall find [waiting for you in the Hereafter].
Let us delve into the deeper meaning of this impactful Hadith in light of the Quran. The word (tuqaddimu) "تُقَدِّمُ" comes from the root word (qadama) "قَدَمَ", which means to send forth, to present, or to advance. It implies taking proactive steps and making efforts to do good deeds, to perform acts of worship, and to engage in righteous actions. The word (tajidu) "تَجِدُ" comes from the root word (jada) "جَدَ", which means to find or encounter. It signifies the consequences or rewards that await us in the Hereafter based on our actions in this world.
The Quran provides us with numerous verses that support the exegesis of this Hadith. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Baqarah (2:286),
Allah does not burden a soul beyond that it can bear. It gets every good that it earns, and it suffers every ill that it earns.
This verse emphasizes the principle of divine justice, stating that we will be rewarded or punished based on our own actions. Our efforts and deeds in this world will determine our fate in the Hereafter.
Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:80), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says,
And say: My Lord! Cause me to come in with a firm incoming and to go out with a firm outgoing. And give me from Thy presence a sustaining Power.
This verse highlights the importance of seeking Allah's guidance and support in our endeavors. It reminds us to approach every situation with sincerity, determination, and reliance on Allah, so that we may find success and fulfillment in both this world and the Hereafter.
Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement serves as a powerful reminder that our actions in this world have consequences that will be waiting for us in the Hereafter. If we strive to do good, to fulfill our religious obligations, and to serve humanity, we will find blessings, rewards, and eternal happiness awaiting us. Conversely, if we engage in sinful behavior, neglect our duties, and harm others, we will find the consequences of our actions awaiting us in the Hereafter.
This Hadith encourages us to reflect on the choices we make in our daily lives. It motivates us to be proactive in seeking good deeds and to be mindful of the impact our actions have on our spiritual journey. It reminds us that our efforts and intentions matter, and that we will be held accountable for them.
For example, if we consistently perform acts of kindness, such as helping the needy, being compassionate towards others, and spreading love and peace, we will find a sense of fulfillment and contentment in this world, and we will be rewarded abundantly in the Hereafter. On the other hand, if we engage in dishonesty, backbiting, and causing harm to others, we will find a sense of unease and dissatisfaction in this world, and we will face the consequences of our actions in the Hereafter.
In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) serves as a profound reminder for Muslims to be proactive in their pursuit of righteousness. It emphasizes the importance of our actions and intentions, and the impact they have on our spiritual journey and ultimate destiny. By striving to do good and seeking Allah's guidance, we can ensure a positive outcome in both this world and the Hereafter. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom and strength to send forth righteous deeds and find eternal bliss in the Hereafter.
