— Imam Ali a.s.
(Ghurar al-Hikam: Silence)

Personal Reflection

In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. Praise be to Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. May peace and blessings be upon our beloved Prophet Muhammad (), his pure progeny, and his noble companions.

The Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) states,

The cause of safety is silence.

This profound statement emphasizes the importance of silence in maintaining one's safety and well-being. Let us delve deeper into the meaning of this Hadith in light of the Quran.

The word (sababu) "سَبَبُ" in Arabic refers to the cause or reason behind something. In this context, it signifies the means or method by which safety can be attained. The word (as-salamati) "السَّلامَةِ" means safety, security, or well-being. And finally, the word (as-samt) "الصَّمْتُ" translates to silence or refraining from speech.

Silence is a powerful tool that can protect us from harm and ensure our safety. The Quran provides us with numerous verses that highlight the significance of silence and its positive impact on our lives. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-A'raf (7:199),

Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant.

This verse encourages us to avoid engaging in futile arguments or unnecessary debates, as they can lead to discord and harm.

Furthermore, in Surah Al-Isra (17:53), Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) advises Prophet Muhammad () to be patient and refrain from responding to the ignorant. This verse teaches us the importance of remaining silent in the face of ignorance and provocation, as it can prevent unnecessary conflicts and protect our well-being.

Imam Ali's (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ) statement holds great wisdom and practicality. Silence can shield us from the harm caused by our own tongues and the tongues of others. When we remain silent, we avoid speaking ill of others, spreading rumors, or engaging in harmful gossip. This not only protects our own reputation but also maintains harmony within our communities.

Silence also allows us to reflect and contemplate before speaking. It gives us the opportunity to choose our words wisely, ensuring that they are beneficial, kind, and truthful. Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) says in Surah Al-Ahzab (33:70),

O you who have believed, fear Allah and speak words of appropriate justice.

This verse reminds us to be mindful of our speech and to speak with justice and righteousness.

Moreover, silence can be a means of self-control and discipline. When we refrain from responding impulsively or angrily, we prevent escalating conflicts and maintain peace. The Quran teaches us in Surah Al-Furqan (25:63),

And the servants of the Most Merciful are those who walk upon the earth in humility, and when the ignorant address them [harshly], they say [words of] peace.

This verse encourages us to respond to ignorance and aggression with peace and tranquility, rather than engaging in heated arguments or confrontations.

In conclusion, the Hadith of Imam Ali (عَلَيْهِ ٱلسَّلَامُ)

The cause of safety is silence

reminds us of the importance of remaining silent in order to safeguard our well-being. By refraining from harmful speech, avoiding unnecessary arguments, and responding to ignorance with peace, we can protect ourselves from harm and maintain harmony in our lives. May Allah (سُبْحَانَهُ وَتَعَالَىٰ) grant us the wisdom to practice silence when necessary and bless us with safety and tranquility.
